Summary

  • Speeds up the encoder's sequence and literal entropy stage, most visibly at the fast levels.
  • The encoder picks the CPU kernel tier exactly once per public call and runs everything below it as code compiled for that tier: no cached kernel fields, no per-compare or per-stage kernel choice.
  • The greedy, lazy and lazy2 strategies' match finder (rows or hash chain) can be chosen, as upstream's ZSTD_c_useRowMatchFinder chooses it: CompressionParametersBuilder::row_match_finder, the C ABI parameter and --[no-]row-match-finder, all three of which had no effect before.
  • Output at the default settings is byte-identical to main at every level, with and without a dictionary.

Changes

  • The sequence section is written by a BMI2-compiled loop on CPUs whose tier has BMI2, from one shared loop body.
  • The sequence bitstream's accumulator and cursor live in locals across the loop (BitBurst) instead of in the writer between fields.
  • The pre-split window is warmed only for the sampling splitter; the border splitter reads too little to need it.
  • with_encode_tier! maps the detected tier to a type K: EncodeTier at each public entry (one-shot and Read-driven frames, every streaming call, the legacy dictionary trainer); frame setup, dictionary priming, the block cut, every matcher backend, LDM, the literal gather and the HUF/FSE stages are generic over K.
  • Below that choice a per-tier kernel is picked with tier_match!, whose untaken arms are dropped before code generation, so even an unoptimised build compiles each tier's kernels only into that tier's monomorph. The search is compiled once per tier: the built-in driver's block search is generic over the tier alone, and callers that drive the matcher through the Matcher trait hand it a dyn sink. A lint-job gate rejects a plain match on K::TIER and a test closure passed straight to a search.
  • Prefix compares call K::common_prefix_len_ptr directly; the runtime dispatch_common_prefix_len_ptr(_with_kernel) helpers and the per-backend kernel fields are removed.
  • The encoder reaches the built-in match generator through a hidden Matcher::builtin_driver(); callers that drive it through the Matcher trait (wrappers that record what it emits) run under the tier the driver detected once at construction.
  • RowMatchFinderMode (Auto / Enable / Disable) decides rows or chain in the row backend; Auto keeps the window rule (rows above 2^14). A dictionary frame keeps its dictionary's choice, as upstream's CDict does.
  • The hash-chain backend's own lazy parser, which no build reached (the lazy band runs one parse in the row backend, chain finder included), is removed with its chain table layout, chain dictionary state, borrowed scan and backend discriminator; that backend now holds only the optimal parsers' binary tree. The streaming encoder's unreachable last-block pre-split loop and the unreferenced hash3 and repeat-offset candidate dispatchers are removed too.
  • Tests run backends on the host tier through with_host_tier! with their sinks passed through dyn_sink. Tier-identity tests run every tier the CPU supports, scalar included: whole frames and streams through every compressor and streaming entry point and through a trait-driven matcher, with and without a dictionary, plus the row probes, the optimal search and the dictionary trainer.

Testing

Formatting, clippy in every CI feature configuration (including no-std, scalar-only and x86_64-unknown-none), rustdoc with warnings denied, the nextest suites, doc tests, the C ABI and ffi-bench tests pass on x86_64 Linux and aarch64 macOS. Compressed frames were compared against main across levels -5..22 on log, decodecorpus, random and small inputs, and with a dictionary on attach- and copy-sized inputs: identical. Frames written with the match finder forced either way decode with the reference zstd CLI.

Part of #493

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added automatic, enabled, and disabled row match finder settings for compression. Configure the mode with --row-match-finder or --no-row-match-finder in the CLI, or through the C API.
  • Performance

    • Compression and dictionary training now use CPU-optimized paths more consistently across supported hardware.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Fixed a bit-writing edge case when a full buffer is flushed before more data is added.
    • Improved streaming completion when input fills the buffer and leaves a remaining suffix.
  • Tests

    • Expanded checks for consistent compression output across CPU tiers, frame decoding, and streaming drain failures.

- with_encode_tier! is the one place a tier tag becomes a type; the block
entry calls it and everything below is generic over the tier
- the literal gather, the Huffman burst and the sequence-section loop take
their kernel from K::TIER, which folds at monomorphisation; the Huffman
  encoder's own per-stream BMI2 detect is gone
- every tier the CPU runs is checked to write the scalar tier's bytes
Every public encoder entry (one-shot frame, Read-driven frame, each
streaming write / flush / finish / start / block call, the legacy
trainer) now chooses the CPU tier exactly once with `with_encode_tier!`
and runs everything below as a monomorph over `K: EncodeTier`: frame
setup, dictionary priming, block cut, the matchers, LDM, the literal
gather and the entropy stage.

- Drop the per-backend cached `kernel` fields (Fast, Dfast, Row, the
BT/HC table) and the `select_kernel()` calls behind them; tier
branches are `match K::TIER`, folded at monomorphisation.
- Prefix compares call `K::common_prefix_len_ptr` directly; remove
  `dispatch_common_prefix_len_ptr(_with_kernel)`, which chose the kernel
  on every compare.
- The built-in driver is reached through a hidden
`Matcher::builtin_driver()`, so the encoder calls its tier-generic
methods; the trait methods keep a single dispatch for external
  matchers driving it directly.
- The row probe helpers that only unit tests reach are `cfg(test)`
  instead of `allow(dead_code)`.
- Tests run backends on this CPU's tier through `with_host_tier!`.

Output is unchanged: the tier only selects among kernels that produce
identical results.
The x86-only test forced a tier through the matcher's former `kernel`
field; it now runs the search under each tier the CPU supports.

Walkthrough

Compression and matching paths now pass selected kernel tiers through generic implementations. The change also adds configurable row-match-finder selection and updates optimal-parser match-table behavior. Sequence encoding uses burst-based bit writing. Tests compare outputs across runnable tiers and cover streaming, dictionary, and row-finder configurations.

Changes: Encode-tier compression and matching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tier types and prefix dispatch
zstd/src/encoding/fastpath/mod.rs, zstd/src/encoding/match_table/helpers.rs, zstd/src/dictionary/legacy.rs
Adds tier marker types and dispatch macros. Common-prefix helpers and legacy dictionary training use the selected tier as a type parameter.
Tier-specialized matcher backends
zstd/src/encoding/dfast/*, zstd/src/encoding/hc/*, zstd/src/encoding/ldm/*, zstd/src/encoding/match_table/*, zstd/src/encoding/row/mod.rs, zstd/src/encoding/simple/*
Passes tier types through matcher backends, match-table operations, and search helpers. The optimal-parser generator and match table use binary-tree state. Tests exercise tier-specific operations and compare results across runnable tiers.
Matcher and frame tier propagation
zstd/src/encoding/match_generator/*, zstd/src/encoding/frame_compressor.rs, zstd/src/encoding/streaming_encoder.rs, zstd/src/encoding/levels/fastest.rs, zstd/src/encoding/mod.rs
Frame, streaming, and matcher-driver paths pass the selected tier through matching, dictionary priming, block splitting, and block emission. Built-in matchers expose a driver hook; other matchers retain fallback calls. Streaming final-block emission and pre-split handling are updated.
Row-match-finder configuration
zstd/src/encoding/parameters.rs, zstd/src/encoding/levels/config.rs, zstd/src/encoding/cparams.rs, zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/*, c-api/src/cctx_params.rs, README.md
Adds Auto, Enable, and Disable modes. Compression parameters, CLI options, and C API settings carry the mode into finder selection.
Block emission and burst bit writing
zstd/src/bit_io/bit_writer.rs, zstd/src/encoding/blocks/compressed/*, zstd/src/huff0/*, .github/workflows/ci.yml
Adds BitBurst for sequence encoding and passes the selected tier through block and Huffman paths. Tests cover burst boundaries and compare encoded bytes across tiers. The CI lint job checks for specified tier-dispatch patterns.

- The row lazy search on wasm32 with simd128 bypassed `K::TIER` behind
a cfg block of its own, which left `FastpathKernel` unused there and
failed the wasm clippy job. It is now one more arm of the same tier
  match every other backend uses.
- `BitBurst::flush` stores the accumulator with one unaligned `u64`
write instead of copying it through a byte array first.
- The match generator's `Matcher` entry points, which wrappers such as
the dictionary finalizer's recorder and the sequence capture drive,
asked the CPU detector on every block. The driver now detects its tier
once when it is built and those entry points run under that value.
- The tier-identity test of the block encoder adds sequences whose extra
bits take both conditional flushes of the sequence loop, which the
  narrow fixture never reached.
- A `match` on `K::TIER` folds in an optimised build, but an unoptimised
one still instantiates every arm's callee for every tier, so each tier's
monomorph of a backend carried the kernels of all the others. The test
build of the library emitted about three times the LLVM IR of `main`
and its compiler peaked near 16 GB, past what a hosted CI runner holds.
- `tier_match!` writes the same arms as `if const` tests, whose untaken
branches are dropped before code generation, and keeps the `match`'s
exhaustiveness check in an inline `const`. Every per-tier kernel choice
and the test-only dictionary-loop door use it. The machine code of an
  optimised build does not change.
- A caller that drives the match generator through `Matcher` (a wrapper
that records what it emits, and the unit tests) got a copy of the whole
search, every backend and kernel, per closure it passed. The trait entry
now hands the search a `dyn` sink, so those callers share one copy per
tier. The encoder reaches the driver directly and keeps its sink's
concrete type, so its path is unchanged.
- Unit tests that drive a backend's search directly passed it their own
closure, so each test compiled the search, every row log and kernel
variant, again per closure and per tier. They now pass it through
`dyn_sink`, and all of them share one copy per tier.
- A lint-job gate rejects the two shapes that multiply the debug build:
a plain `match` (or comparison) on `K::TIER` below the tier choice, and
a closure handed straight to `start_matching::<K>`.
- A closure's type carries every generic parameter of the function it is
written in. The block's record closure was written in a function generic
over the matcher type as well as the tier, so the built-in driver's whole
search was compiled again for each matcher type that wraps it. The
built-in branch now runs in a function generic over the tier alone.
- The tier-identity tests that call a search directly pass their sink
through `dyn_sink`, and the lint gate covers every `start_matching*`
  entry in test files.

A tier is chosen once and the code below it is compiled per tier, so on
any one machine the detection runs a single tier and the scalar fallback
(what a CPU without the extended instructions runs) is never exercised.

- Frames and streams are written under every tier the CPU can run and
compared byte for byte: the compressor's reader, one-shot and
known-size entry points, the streaming write, flush, finish and
single-block calls, and a matcher reaching the built-in driver only
through the trait, with and without a dictionary, at a level of each
backend. Every frame is decoded back.
- The row probe test helpers and the dictionary trainer run under every
tier and require one answer; the trainer takes its tier as a parameter
  for that.
- Tests for the binary-tree rebase (the replay rebuilds the walked tree;
a walk past the index range rebases and matches a plain walk), a
burst flushing a full accumulator, and a skip with no hint.
- The hash3 candidate dispatcher, its per-kernel variants and its body
macro had no caller and are removed.
- The streaming encoder's last-block pre-split loop could not run: a
write emits a block the moment it fills. It is replaced by an
assertion, and the test of that cut now builds a stream where the
pre-splitter does cut, which fails if it does not.
- The wide-extra sequences in the block tier test use lengths with 16
extra bits, as their comment states.
- The optimal-search tier test covers btopt and btultra as well as
  btultra2.
- A drain refusing the block a flush or a finish emits fails that call
  and leaves the context failed.
The greedy, lazy and lazy2 strategies search rows or a hash chain.
The choice followed the window alone; it can now be set, as upstream's
ZSTD_c_useRowMatchFinder sets it (zstd_compress.c:246).

- RowMatchFinderMode (auto, enable, disable) on the parameter builder.
A dictionary frame keeps its dictionary's choice, as upstream's CDict
does. The C ABI takes ZSTD_c_useRowMatchFinder and the command takes
--[no-]row-match-finder; both were accepted and ignored before.
- The hash-chain backend's own lazy parser is removed. The lazy band
runs one parse in the row backend, which already searches the chain
for small windows, so nothing in a build reached the second parser
except tests. With it go its chain layout, chain dictionary state,
borrowed scan and the HcBackend discriminator: the backend now holds
  only the optimal parsers' tree.
- Tests that drove the removed parser now drive the path that runs:
the chain finder in the row backend, or the tree. The long-distance
test on the chain uses the new mode.

Frames are byte-identical to the previous commit at every level from
-5 to 22 on five fixtures, with and without a dictionary.
