Summary

  • gcmt-to-realisation docstring now cites the Haynie et al. (2026) interface/intraslab classification instead of the NZ NSHM 2022 rule.
  • tests/test_gcmt_to_realisation.py: event 2103645 (2003 Fiordland) is now expected to be subduction_slab (was subduction_interface); the comments are updated to match.

No code change is needed for the classifier call: CMTClassifier.tectonic_type(centroid, nodal_plane_1, nodal_plane_2) and TectonicType are unchanged.

Dependency

This depends on ucgmsim/source_modelling branch haynie-tectonic-type (ucgmsim/source_modelling#169). Until that branch is merged and released, the updated test fails against the released source_modelling. The source_modelling>=2026.10.2 pin is not changed here. Following earlier cross-repo changes (e.g. 35f9e43), raise the floor to the release containing it before merging.

Classifier output for the test events (source_modelling @ 8de75e2)

Event Crustal Interface Slab Result
2103645 (2003 Fiordland) 0.000 0.460 0.540 subduction_slab (changed)
2016p858000 (2016 Kaikōura) 1.000 0.000 0.000 active_shallow
2017p795065 0.000 0.325 0.675 subduction_slab

Fiordland sits about 9 km below the Slab2 interface, and its slip is very oblique to the Puysegur plate-motion rake, so the slab probability is slightly higher.

Test plan

  • With the source_modelling branch installed into the venv: pytest tests/test_gcmt_to_realisation.py (5 passed) and the full suite (683 passed, 1 skipped)
  • ruff check/format and ty (pre-commit hooks)
  • Bump the source_modelling floor once it is released

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

source_modelling's CMTClassifier.tectonic_type now uses the Haynie et
al. (2026) interface/intraslab classification instead of the NZ NSHM
2022 and NGA-SUB rules. Update the gcmt-to-realisation docstring and the
test expectations: the 2003 Fiordland event (2103645) sits ~9 km below
the Slab2 interface with slip very oblique to the Puysegur plate motion,
and is now classified as subduction_slab.
