The fork falls behind block/buzz unless someone brings in each release by hand. main is already 12 commits behind desktop-v0.5.28. This PR adds a daily workflow that opens a sync PR for each new upstream desktop release. Sync PRs merge with a merge commit, so main is never rewritten.

flowchart TD
    start["Daily at 13:17 UTC, or workflow_dispatch with an optional tag"] --> latest["Find the latest block/buzz desktop-v* release"]
    latest --> contains{"main already contains the tag?"}
    contains -- "yes" --> done["Exit"]
    contains -- "no" --> pr{"A PR from sync/TAG exists (any state)?"}
    pr -- "yes" --> done
    pr -- "no" --> ref["Point sync/TAG at the upstream tag commit (refs API)"]
    ref --> open["Open PR: chore(sync): merge upstream TAG"]
Loading
  • The workflow creates the branch with the refs API, not git push. A push of upstream workflow changes needs the workflows permission, which GITHUB_TOKEN cannot have.
  • A closed sync PR is never reopened, so a release can be skipped on purpose.
  • The PR body tells reviewers to use Create a merge commit, and to close and reopen the PR to start CI.
  • .coderabbit.yaml skips PRs whose title contains "merge upstream". Upstream already reviewed that code.
  • The workflow runs only in voltagecloud/buzz.

Stack

Base: #8 (dev-2884-coderabbit), because this PR extends its .coderabbit.yaml. It is not part of the DEV-2884 agent stack. After #8 merges, GitHub retargets this PR to main.

Prerequisites

  • voltagecloud/voltage-terraform#973 is applied. It turns off required linear history on main and lets GITHUB_TOKEN open PRs.
  • Scheduled workflows run only from main, so the first scheduled run follows this merge.

Validation

  • actionlint: pass.
  • .coderabbit.yaml passes the published CodeRabbit schema.
  • Dry run of the step script against the live repositories, with the branch and PR writes replaced by echo: it selected desktop-v0.5.28 (f87c108) and built the expected PR.
  • The refs API created and deleted a test branch at f87c108 with a token that has no workflow scope.
  • All 12 commits between main and desktop-v0.5.28 have verified signatures, as main protection requires.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds a scheduled and manually triggered workflow that creates upstream desktop release sync pull requests. It also excludes pull requests with merge upstream in the title from auto-review.

Changes: Upstream sync automation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Upstream release sync workflow
.github/workflows/voltage-upstream-sync.yml
The workflow selects and validates a desktop release, checks comparison and existing pull request state, creates sync/<tag> when needed, and opens a pull request targeting main.
Auto-review exclusion
.coderabbit.yaml
Auto-review now ignores pull request titles containing merge upstream.

The new upstream sync workflow builds its comparison against the upstream release in a format GitHub does not document, so it will likely fail before it opens any sync pull request. This does not affect existing code or users, but the automation would not do its job until the comparison is corrected. Fix it before merging.

The base branch was changed.

A daily workflow finds the latest block/buzz desktop release that main does not contain, points a sync/<tag> branch at it, and opens a PR to merge it with a merge commit. CodeRabbit skips these PRs because upstream already reviewed the code.
