Purpose

Resolves wso2/product-is#28294 (user store part).

A JDBC user store lists its roles through doGetRoleNames(filter, maxItemLimit), which applies MaxRoleNameListLength (100 by default) through setPSRestrictions and has no offset. A caller that needs the groups of a store holding more than 100 groups, such as GET /scim2/Groups?domain=PRIMARY, gets the first 100, sees a total of 100, and gets nothing for startIndex=101. It can neither page past the limit nor learn the real number of groups.

Goals

Let a caller read one window of a user store's role names, ordered by name, and count the names matching the same filter.

Approach

  • AbstractUserStoreManager gets public listRoleNames(filter, limit, offset) and countRoleNames(filter) for a domain qualified filter (PRIMARY/*, SECONDARY/grp*). They delegate to new protected hooks doGetRoleNames(filter, limit, offset) and doCountRoleNames(filter). As in the paginated user listing, the offset is a one based start index (a value below 1 means the first page) and a limit below 0 or above MaxRoleNameListLength is reset to that maximum. The two methods run outside callSecure on purpose: that wrapper rethrows only UserStoreException, so it would turn the NotImplementedException decline into a failure instead of a fallback; the newer listGroups(Condition, ...) API takes the same approach.
  • The base hooks throw NotImplementedException. So do a filter without a domain, the Internal, Application and Workflow domains, a store that is not an AbstractUserStoreManager, and a manager with group reading disabled. A caller treats that as "use the existing listing". An unknown domain is a UserStoreClientException.
  • JDBCUserStoreManager implements both hooks with a windowed query ordered by UM_ROLE_NAME and a matching COUNT, per database type, following the paginated user listing: RoleFilterPaginatedSQL (with -mssql, -db2 and -oracle variants and an H2 form) and RoleFilterPaginatedCountSQL (with an H2 form). MaxSearchTime applies. JDBCRealmUtil seeds the statements like the other SQL properties, and a user store can set its own.
  • A store whose role listing is customised declines paging while the paginated statements it would run are still the shipped ones: a role list SQL (GetRoleListSQL, GetRoleListSQLH2 or their escape variants) that differs from the shipped statement, or a subclass that overrides doGetRoleNames(filter, maxItemLimit) in Java. Such a store keeps today's listing instead of running the default query against UM_ROLE, and the decline is logged once per store at WARN, naming the statement properties that database type reads (for example RoleFilterPaginatedSQL-mssql, or RoleFilterPaginatedSQLH2 and RoleFilterPaginatedCountSQLH2 on H2). Configured SQL is compared with whitespace collapsed. A store that wants to page with its own schema sets those properties; the placeholders are documented on the shipped statements (name pattern, tenant id, then the window: row count and rows to skip by default and on H2, first and last row number on SQL Server and DB2, last row number and rows to skip on Oracle).
  • A database type the shipped statements are not written for (anything other than MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, H2, Oracle, SQL Server and DB2) declines as well, unless the store configures RoleFilterPaginatedSQL-<type> for it. The database type is detected once per store, so a store that declines does so before borrowing a connection on later calls.
  • The SQL Server and DB2 window statements order the page by its row number. A window or count that exceeds MaxSearchTime fails the request rather than returning an empty page as the existing listing does, so a truncated page is not mistaken for a complete one; the error names the timeout and is logged.
  • getRoleNames and doGetRoleNames(filter, maxItemLimit) are unchanged.

Release note

Groups of a JDBC user store can be read page by page beyond MaxRoleNameListLength, together with the real number of groups.

Documentation

N/A for the default schema. A JDBC user store with a custom schema can set RoleFilterPaginatedSQL and RoleFilterPaginatedCountSQL (and the database specific variants) to page its groups; without them it keeps the existing listing.

Automation tests

  • Unit tests

New JDBCPaginatedRoleListingTest (TestNG, H2, 34 cases): order and windows across pages, MaxRoleNameListLength not limiting the window, count agreeing with the list over 9 filters, limit and offset edges, domain resolution (no domain, hybrid domains, unknown domain, a store that cannot page, group reading disabled on the caller and on the resolved store), the custom SQL cases (each role list statement customised alone, custom list and paginated SQL with the shipped count SQL, all three custom, the shipped text set explicitly), a subclass overriding the role listing in Java with and without its own paginated SQL, and a missing paginated statement. mvn clean install in core/org.wso2.carbon.user.core: 53 tests, 0 failures.

Test environment

  • JDK 21, macOS.
  • The window and count statements were run through the real JDBC drivers against MySQL 8.0, MariaDB 10.6, PostgreSQL 16, Oracle 23 Free and SQL Server 2019, 22 checks each: three pages in order, a page past the end, an odd offset, the limit not capping the window, and count agreeing with the list over 9 filters. DB2 was not run.
  • Runtime on an IS 7.4.0-SNAPSHOT pack built from product-is master with this change, the SCIM2 change and the Console change. 341 groups in PRIMARY, MaxRoleNameListLength left at 100:
    • GET /scim2/Groups?domain=PRIMARY reports 341 (stock pack: 100).
    • startIndex=101&count=50 returns 50 groups (stock pack: 0).
    • filter=displayName co grp reports 300 and pages (stock pack: 100, nothing past it).
    • With a customised GetRoleListSQLH2 in deployment.toml, the listing stays as today (100, HTTP 200, no errors).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added paginated role search, allowing you to browse matching roles in smaller, ordered result sets.
    • Added the ability to count roles matching a filter, including searches within domain-qualified user stores.
    • Added database-specific support for role search and counting. Paging may be unavailable for some custom configurations or unsupported searches.

The change adds domain-routed role listing and counting, with JDBC pagination and count queries for several database variants. It also adds H2-backed tests for pagination, filtering, custom SQL, and unsupported cases.

Changes: Paginated role listing

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 25bbd

Stores using a custom base pagination query may be unable to page roles on some database dialects. Resolve that configuration path before merge or explicitly accept the limitation.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 25bbd

The new read-only operations retain tenant filtering and group-reading checks, and decline unsupported or customized listings unless matching queries are supplied. No exploitable boundary violation was established. Downstream authorization and externally managed configuration updates remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller permitted to use the new operations can enumerate role names beyond the former first-page cap and obtain the complete matching count. With shipped SQL, that expanded read scope remains bounded by the selected manager's tenant and non-shared roles; external caller authorization is not established here.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The routing layer checks group-reading capability on both the invoking manager and the resolved store. Request filter and window values are bound parameters, while SQL statement text comes from configuration. The customization guard checks legacy SQL and Java listing overrides before allowing shipped pagination statements.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Customization classification is cached for a manager's lifetime, although query properties are read on subsequent requests. An in-place legacy SQL update could therefore leave classification stale. The inspected deployment path clears cached realms and constructs new managers, countering that scenario for this owned lifecycle; external same-manager mutation remains unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make manager-lifetime SQL configuration ownership explicit. Preserve manager replacement for configuration changes; if in-place updates are supported, invalidate cached customization classification and use a consistent configuration snapshot for validation and execution.
