Depends on #44. Only the top commit (f8f4a11) is new; the first commit is #44. I'll mark this ready for review once that merges.

Summary

Discovered reasoning-effort variants set settings.reasoningEffort, which only OpenCode's OpenAI runtimes read. On OpenCode 2 a provider can use @opencode/ai/providers/anthropic or anthropic-compatible to reach Claude through the proxy's /v1/messages; there every variant was a silent no-op.

The plugin now records supports_adaptive_thinking and thinking_always_on from /v1/model/info, and on Anthropic packages emits each level as { thinking: { type: "adaptive", display: "summarized" }, effort }, the shape OpenCode's own catalog uses for adaptive-thinking Claude models. none becomes thinking: { type: "disabled" } and is dropped when thinking is always on. Models that don't report adaptive thinking get no variants on those packages rather than inert ones. OpenAI packages are unchanged.

Cache entries written by #44 carry neither hint, so CACHE_VERSION moves to 5.

Type of change

  • 🐛 Bug fix (non-breaking)
  • ✨ New feature (non-breaking)
  • 💥 Breaking change
  • 📝 Documentation only
  • 🔧 Internal / refactor

Checklist

  • npm run typecheck passes
  • No new runtime dependencies (or justified in this PR description)
  • README updated if public API or behavior changed
  • CHANGELOG.md updated under ## [Unreleased]
  • Commit messages follow Conventional Commits

How was this tested?

  • npm test: 142 passing; tsc --noEmit clean.
  • Live: LiteLLM 1.104.0 → GitHub Copilot and → Vertex AI, OpenCode 2.0.30, a provider on anthropic-compatible with includeModels: ["*claude*"]. The picker shows low…max for the Claude models; #low vs #max on the same prompt give clearly different thinking-token counts (60 vs ~500); multi-turn tool calls and background refresh keep the respelled variants.

This change was developed with help from an AI coding agent (Claude, running in OpenCode); I reviewed and tested it before opening the PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved Anthropic runtime compatibility for OpenCode 2 reasoning controls.
    • Models supporting adaptive thinking now expose compatible effort variants using the appropriate thinking settings.
    • Models without adaptive-thinking support no longer display unsupported variants.
    • “None” effort correctly disables thinking unless the model requires thinking to remain enabled.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance for configuring Anthropic and Anthropic-compatible providers, including model routing examples.

📝 Walkthrough

Model discovery and caching now retain adaptive-thinking capabilities. The v2 provider uses these hints to map reasoning-effort variants for Anthropic runtime packages. Tests, README guidance, and a changelog entry cover the updated behavior.

Changes: Model compatibility and capability hints

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect and cache model hints
src/types/index.ts, src/plugin/index.ts, src/utils/model-cache.ts, test/model-cache.test.ts, test/model-compatibility.test.ts, test/plugin-v1.test.ts
Model metadata and cached hints now include adaptive-thinking support and always-on thinking flags. Cache version 5 normalizes each hint to true only when its value is strictly true. Tests cover the updated cache and compatibility expectations.
Resolve compatibility and Anthropic variants
src/plugin/v2.ts, test/plugin-v2.test.ts, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
Anthropic runtime variants use thinking and effort when adaptive thinking is supported. The none variant is disabled when thinking can be switched off and omitted when thinking is always on. Models without adaptive-thinking support receive no reasoning variants; other packages retain the original variants. Tests and documentation cover variant handling, refreshes, and provider configuration.

Models reporting minimal may offer a variant that fails when selected. Filtering unsupported efforts is a localized fix; otherwise, the PR is mergeable with this limitation understood.

Discovered reasoning-effort variants set `reasoningEffort`, which only the
OpenAI runtimes read. On OpenCode 2 a provider can use
`@opencode/ai/providers/anthropic` or `anthropic-compatible` to reach Claude
through the proxy's `/v1/messages`; there every variant was a silent no-op.

Record whether `/v1/model/info` reports `supports_adaptive_thinking` and
`thinking_always_on`, and on Anthropic packages emit each level as
`{ thinking: { type: "adaptive", display: "summarized" }, effort }`, the
shape OpenCode's own catalog uses for adaptive-thinking Claude models.
`none` becomes `thinking: { type: "disabled" }` and is dropped when thinking
is always on. Models without adaptive thinking get no variants on those
packages rather than inert ones. OpenAI packages are unchanged.

Cache entries written before this change carry neither hint, so
`CACHE_VERSION` moves to 5 and such caches are rediscovered.

Hey @mkowalski — thank you so much for this, and for #44 as well! 🙏 This is a really thoughtful pair of PRs: catching that reasoningEffort is a silent no-op on the Anthropic runtime packages, and respelling the levels to the thinking + effort shape OpenCode's own catalog uses, is exactly the kind of detail that's easy to miss and lovely to see fixed. The tests (and the live #low vs #max thinking-token check) make it very easy to trust.

Quick heads-up on the branch: now that #44 has merged and shipped in v1.6.0, this one was showing a conflict because it still carried #44's original commit on top of the old base. I rebased it onto main, which dropped that now-duplicate commit and left just your new fix(v2): spell effort variants for Anthropic runtime packages — authorship preserved, so it's still entirely your commit. tsc --noEmit is clean and the full suite passes (142 tests), and the PR is now CLEAN / mergeable. 🎉 (A --force-with-lease push to your branch was needed for that; shout if you'd rather I hadn't touched it and I'll undo.)

One tiny, totally optional thing whenever you have a moment — no rush at all: anthropicVariants passes the reported effort level straight through as effort, so if LiteLLM ever reports a level the Anthropic runtime doesn't accept (e.g. minimal), we'd emit an invalid variant. If you happen to know the accepted set for adaptive thinking, a small filter/map would close that edge nicely. Genuinely fine to leave as-is if you'd rather keep this focused.

Thanks again for the careful work and for being patient while #44 landed — much appreciated. 💛
