Release Notes

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/api-fetch)

v7.55.0

Compare Source

New Features
  • Add apiFetch.unregister to remove a registered middleware, and expose apiFetch.httpV1Middleware so the X-HTTP-Method-Override behavior can be opted out of (#82408).
  • Expose apiFetch.defaultFetchHandler so the default fetch handler can be restored after setFetchHandler overrides it (#82553)
Bug Fixes
  • Resolve to null for a 200 response with an empty body instead of throwing an invalid_json error (#79325).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/babel-plugin-import-jsx-pragma)

v5.55.0

Compare Source

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/base-styles)

v13.1.0

Compare Source

Internal
  • Regenerate the WPDS fallback map with the solid neutral interactive background state tokens. (#82391)
Enhancements
  • Add a $block-bg-padding variable that resolves the default background padding through the --wp--style--block-background-padding custom property, keeping the existing values as its fallback (#82024).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/blob)

v4.55.0

Compare Source

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/block-editor)

v17.1.0

Compare Source

New Features
  • BackgroundImageControl: Support setting the background image from a URL, through the URL field in the media replace popover (#82230).
Enhancements
  • Borders: rename the "Border & Shadow" panel to "Borders", whichever of its controls are available, and always show the Border and Shadow controls' visible labels. A stable panel title is what lets the Border label render unconditionally, so its "Unlink sides" toggle lines up with the border radius one (#82163).
  • ListView: Updated to use outset-ring__focus() mixin for focus outline wherever applicable instead of the previous box-shadow implementation. (#82129)
Deprecations
  • __unstableSetEditorMode: Deprecate the action. It only wrote the editorTool preference that backed the removed Write/Design tool, and nothing has read that preference since #72193. It now dispatches nothing and logs a deprecation notice (#82677).
Internal
  • BlockPreview: Stop applying the private Disabled component class name to block previews (#82651).
  • Pattern Overrides Dropdown: Use Text from @wordpress/ui instead of __experimentalText from @wordpress/components (#77492).
  • Allowed Blocks Modal: Use Text from @wordpress/ui instead of __experimentalText from @wordpress/components (#78119).
  • Block Switcher: Use Text from @wordpress/ui instead of __experimentalText from @wordpress/components for the bindings hint (#77366).
  • Inspector Popover Header: Use Text from @wordpress/ui instead of __experimentalHeading and __experimentalText from @wordpress/components (#77449).
  • Remove unused dependencies @wordpress/escape-html, @wordpress/wordcount and deepmerge (#82103).
  • Remove tsconfig project references to packages that are not dependencies (#82106).
Bug Fixes
  • NavigableToolbar: Preserve toolbar semantics while it is hidden, so asynchronous control changes do not remount custom block toolbars (#82574).
  • ListView: Drop the block icon's variation colors while the row is selected, so the icon keeps contrast against the selection background (#82498).
  • Flex layout: Output flex-direction: row when a viewport override switches a vertical layout to horizontal, so the base flex-direction: column no longer keeps applying on that viewport (#82364).
  • BlockManager: Color library block icons with color while retaining a fill fallback for custom icons that do not use currentColor. (#78812)
  • Block List Appender: Show the appender button as a drop target when dragging a block over an empty container such as a Column, restoring the reveal that the visibility-to-opacity migration left behind (#77852).
  • Inserter: Keep the hovered block preview inside the viewport, so a tall preview in a short window is no longer clipped (#82060).
  • Element styles: Register each block's element-style CSS override with the block's clientId, so the editor orders them by block position instead of registration order. A parent's link color re-registered after a child's (e.g. by resetting and re-picking it) no longer overrides the child's own link color in the canvas (#77833).
  • Client-side media processing: Refuse a batch of more than one file when the caller only takes one, such as a Cover block placeholder, matching what the server-side upload path already did. Every dropped file was uploaded instead, and the block kept whichever one finished last (#82041).
  • BlockVariationPicker: Set icon colors with color so stroke-based variation icons retain their intended unfilled appearance, while keeping a non-important fill fallback for third-party icons that do not use currentColor. (#78808)
  • BlockIcon, List View: Remove the obsolete fill: CanvasText override for forced colors mode. (#82481)
Internal
  • Use the .jsx extension for JavaScript source files that contain JSX (#80990).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/block-library)

v11.0.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • Remove the experimental Form, Input Field, Form Submit Button, and Form Submission Notification blocks, along with the "Form and input blocks" experiment that gated them.
Enhancements
  • Math: Declare interactivity.clientNavigation support. The block's front end output is static markup, and without the declaration a Math block inside a Query block forced full page reloads on pagination (#82248).
  • Paragraph, List, Heading, Preformatted, Columns, Group, Template Part: Read the default padding these blocks add when they have a background color from the --wp--style--block-background-padding custom property, so themes can change or remove it (#82024).
  • Query: Show a snackbar notice instead of a blocking modal when "Reload full page" is turned on automatically because a block inside the Query block doesn't support client-side navigation (#82246).
Bug Fixes
  • Footnotes: Prefix newly created footnote IDs with fn- so they always start with a letter. A bare UUID often starts with a digit, and an ID that does is not a valid CSS identifier, so querySelector( '#' + id ) threw and #id style rules never matched. Existing footnotes keep their IDs (#82398).
  • Navigation: Restore flex-grow on the menu container in the editor, where the visually hidden menu description breaks the :only-child selector the front end relies on, so the "Space between" and other justification settings apply in the canvas as they do on the front end (#78447).
  • Image: Fix cropped galleries rendering images at their natural height in the editor canvas. The baseline inline height: auto is no longer emitted for images inside a cropped gallery, so the gallery's own cropping CSS applies (#82318).
  • Tabs: Activate the tab that a URL hash points into, so an anchor set on a block inside a tab panel can be reached. Anchor links followed after the page has loaded are handled too, matching the Accordion block (#81744).
  • Accordion Panel: Reset padding-block when panel is hidden (#81782).
  • Query: Stop writing excludeCurrent: null into the query attribute of blocks that never had the key. The mount effect that clears a stale exclusion treated the absent key as stale, changing the serialized markup of every pre-existing Query block as soon as the editor opened it (#82147).
  • Icon: Preserve intrinsic SVG styles when applying block styles or rotation, and keep stroke widths scaling with the block's size for compatibility (#78808).
  • Image: Keep the selected image size, and re-point a media file or attachment page link, when an edit in the media editor saves to a new attachment. Cropping, rotating or flipping left the block rendering the full-size file while the size control still reported the size the user had chosen, and left the link pointing at the pre-edit image (#82316).
  • Query, Post Template: Treat a query attribute that omits postType as querying posts, matching build_query_vars_from_query_block() (#82465).
Internal
  • Search: Keep the editor's button icon fill-based and separate from @wordpress/icons so it matches the PHP renderer and existing theme fill styles. (#82338)
  • Remove unused dependencies @wordpress/keyboard-shortcuts, @wordpress/reusable-blocks and @wordpress/viewport (#82103).
  • Use the .jsx extension for JavaScript source files that contain JSX (#80990).
  • Remove tsconfig project references to packages that are not dependencies (#82106).

v5.55.0

Compare Source

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/blocks)

v16.0.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • BlockTransform is now a discriminated union over its type, so that each kind of transform declares its own fields: shortcode transforms accept tag and attributes with shortcode matchers, enter transforms regExp, prefix transforms prefix, and raw transforms selector and schema. blocks, variationName and shortcuts now belong to block transforms only, and blocks is required there. This fixes type errors when registering blocks with documented shortcode transforms, but reading a variant field off a BlockTransform that has not been narrowed on its type no longer compiles — including the result of findTransform (#81811).
  • Removed the transforms.supportedMobileTransforms block type property, along with the supportedMobileTransforms and usingMobileTransformations properties of a block transform. They were only meaningful to the React Native implementation, removed in #78747, and nothing reads them any more. Note that the filter they drove was not platform-gated: a block type still declaring supportedMobileTransforms had its transforms filtered everywhere, and getBlockTransforms no longer filters them at all (#81831).
Bug Fixes
  • getBlockAttributes no longer breaks when a block has no content to parse, such as a self-closing shortcode: missing content is treated as empty markup instead of reaching the attribute matchers (#81831).

v40.1.0

Compare Source

Enhancements
  • Compound components: Report missing state or accessible semantic structure with clear developer guidance (#82509).
  • ToggleGroupControl: Honor the root disabled prop so the whole control is unselectable (#82259).
  • Validated form controls: Use --wpds-color-stroke-interactive-error for the invalid-state focus ring and border (#82410).
  • Popover: Widen offset to also accept an object with separate main and cross axis offsets. The same applies to BorderBoxControl's popoverOffset prop (#82060).
  • ToolsPanelItem: Add defaultShown to show an optional item that has no value, and an onShownChange callback that fires only when the user toggles the item in the panel's menu (#78010).
  • BorderBoxControl: render the linked/unlinked toggle in a row alongside the label when a visible label is present, so it lines up with the equivalent toggle on sibling controls. Without a visible label the toggle stays beside the inputs, as before. The visible label is now a BaseControl.VisualLabel, so it renders as a span rather than a label element; it was never associated with an input in either form (#82163).
  • TabPanel: Updated to show outline via design system's mixin for focus ring instead of legacy box-shadow implementation (#82421).
Bug Fixes
  • FormTokenField: Wrap to the last suggestion when pressing the up arrow with no suggestion selected, instead of leaving the selection on an invalid index (#82646).
  • Disabled: Keep the className passed by the consumer on the wrapper when isDisabled is false. Only components-disabled and the disabled styling are conditional now, so the wrapper stays styleable and targetable in both states (#82648).
  • ProgressBar: Remove determinate transitions and use a slower, stepped indeterminate animation when reduced motion is preferred. (#82490)
  • ColorPalette: Apply the computed contrast color to the selected checkmark now that the icon is stroke-based. (#78812)
  • CheckboxControl: Color the checked and indeterminate icons with color rather than fill, so they stay visible now that those icons are stroke-based. (#78812)
  • BorderBoxControl: Give the group of border controls an accessible name from the label prop, by rendering the wrapper as a role="group" associated with the label through aria-labelledby. A consumer-supplied aria-labelledby or aria-label takes precedence over label and names the group instead; the wrapper is only given the group role when one of the three provides a name. A hidden label (hideLabelFromVision) now renders as a span rather than a label element, matching the visible one (#82279).
  • Snackbar: Restart the auto-dismiss timer when a notice is recreated with the same ID during removal (#81764).
  • ToolsPanel: Stop a panel item whose panelId doesn't match the panel from writing its value into that panel's menu, which could leave an orphaned entry in the dropdown (#82127).
  • Icon: Merge a consumer-supplied style prop with the icon's intrinsic styles instead of replacing them, so styles like fill: none on stroke-based icons survive unless the consumer overrides the same property explicitly. (#78808)
  • ItemGroup: Drop the blanket path { fill: currentColor } rule that was overriding stroke-based icons' intended fill via inheritance bypass. Paths without an explicit fill still inherit currentColor from the surrounding SVG. Custom paths that specify a fill now retain it instead of being overridden by ItemGroup. (#78808)
  • Tip: Preserve the intended yellow color after its icon became stroke-based. (#78808)
  • Button, Placeholder: Remove the obsolete fill: CanvasText override for forced colors mode. (#82481)
  • InputControl, SelectControl, TextareaControl: Match the @wordpress/ui disabled styles, so the disabled state is distinguishable again. The border and text now use the design system's disabled tokens, and the background no longer changes (#82454).
Documentation
  • Add an Emotion-to-SCSS Modules migration guide for contributors (#82567).
Internal
  • FormToggle: Use the standard inert state instead of the Disabled component's class name for inherited disabled styles (#82651).
  • Migrate JSX files to TypeScript and remove their ESLint filename suppressions (#82132).
  • Use the .jsx extension for JavaScript source files that contain JSX (#80990).
  • Remove tsconfig project references to packages that are not dependencies (#82106).
  • ToolsPanel: Cut the render cascade panel items set off when the selected block changes, and keep a default control resettable when Reset all leaves its value in place (#82180).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/core-data)

v8.0.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • The entity record selectors infer the record from their kind and name arguments with a const type parameter. TypeScript consumers now require TypeScript 5 or newer. (#81863)
  • Post and Page now match the REST schema: content.is_protected is replaced by content.protected, and content.block_version is typed as a number rather than a string. Rename any read of content.is_protected, and drop annotations or casts that treated block_version as a string. (#81863)
  • The getGlobalStyles and saveGlobalStyles shortcuts now use GlobalStyles instead of the unrelated GlobalStylesRevision record. saveGlobalStyles requires the record ID and accepts a plain string title, matching the REST API update route and schema. (#81863)
  • RenderedText omits raw outside the edit context instead of typing it as never, so a record requested with context: 'view' or context: 'embed' no longer exposes title.raw or content.raw. Read rendered in those contexts, or request the record with context: 'edit'. (#81863)
Bug Fixes
  • Keep a query's totalItems in sync when records are removed from it, so the page count is correct after a deletion instead of only after the next fetch (#82244).
  • EntityProvider: a revisionId now only affects the entity it is set on. Other entities rendered inside it, such as the posts in a Query Loop, keep showing their own data (#82517).
  • getEntityRecord and getRevision return the same record for queries that request the same _fields, instead of a new object on every call, which made useSelect warn under SCRIPT_DEBUG (#82552).
Enhancements
  • getEntityRecord and getEntityRecords now infer verified post, page, media, block, navigation, global styles, icon, and icon collection records from their kind and name arguments and resolve their context from the query, so getEntityRecord( 'postType', 'post', id ).title type checks without naming Post by hand, and a context: 'view' request is not typed with the edit-context fields. Pairs the map does not cover still resolve to the previous union, and a plugin opts in by merging into EntityRecordTypes or a per-kind interface. A call that names no context resolves the one its entity is registered to be fetched in, declared in EntityContextDefaults and extended the same way; a pair that declares none resolves to every context. Adds Block, Navigation, GlobalStyles, and IconCollection records, and drops assertions only from mapped call sites; one assertion was hiding a nullable draft date. (#81863)
  • Add the REST class_list field to inferred posts, pages, and media, and add media filename and filesize fields. Embed records omit these view/edit-only fields. (#81863)
  • Queries that use _fields infer a recursively partial entity record, so TypeScript requires callers to account for omitted top-level and nested object fields. (#81863)
  • Keep Attachment.caption.rendered available in view and embed contexts while limiting caption.raw to edit responses, matching the REST schema. (#81863)
  • Match the Navigation embed record and current global styles ID types to their REST responses. (#81863)
  • Export ContextualField so plugins can describe context-sensitive fields when extending the entity record map. (#81863)
  • PostStatus accepts statuses registered by WordPress or plugins while preserving autocomplete for the built-in values. (#81863)
  • Add page_for_privacy_policy to the Settings entity type, exposed by the Gutenberg plugin from the wp_page_for_privacy_policy option (#82422).
Internal
  • Remove the template activation (active_templates) experiment: drop the registeredTemplate entity and the experiment-only wp_template endpoint rewrites and query params (#82241).
  • Remove unused dependency @wordpress/is-shallow-equal (#82103).
  • Use the .jsx extension for JavaScript source files that contain JSX (#80990).
  • Remove tsconfig project references to packages that are not dependencies (#82106).

Breaking Changes
  • Increase the minimum required Node.js version to v22.19.0. The lighthouse dependency is now ^13.4.1, which requires it. Learn more about Node.js releases (#81916).
  • Editor.switchEditorTool(): Remove the helper. It clicked the Write/Design "Tools" toolbar button, which the editor no longer renders since #72193 (#82677).
New Features
  • Admin.visitSiteEditor(): When the GUTENBERG_E2E_SITE_EDITOR_V2 environment variable is set, visit the extensible site editor (admin.php?page=site-editor-v2) instead of site-editor.php, translating the classic query args to the equivalent v2 route, and wait for the lazily loaded editor to finish initializing on edit routes. RequestUtils.setGutenbergExperiments() keeps the gutenberg-extensible-site-editor experiment enabled in that mode so specs that reset experiments do not turn the v2 editor off mid-run.
Enhancements
  • Widen the @types/node peer dependency to >=20, so consumers on Node 22 or 24 type definitions no longer hit a peer resolution conflict (#82616).
Bug Fixes
  • Metrics.initWebVitals(): Resolve web-vitals from the installed dependency so published consumers can load it outside the Gutenberg mo

Superseded by #52187, which folds this round in (08a70aebf6): both trains have to land together, otherwise the tree carries two copies of components, element and core-data until the second PR merges (see #52187 (comment)). The Renovate groups are being merged so this stops recurring: #52316.

Closing.
