Summary

Fix an allocation gap left behind when set_quiet() overwrites an existing
long property with a shorter value.

Problem

Long property values are stored out-of-line in the property area.

When a quiet write replaces a long value with a shorter one, the new value
occupies less space, but the arena still retains the old allocation extent.
This leaves a detectable hole in the property area.

For example, this can be reproduced by replacing a 92-byte long property
value with an 86-byte value.

Fix

Track the previous long-value length and compact the property area when a
quiet long-value write shrinks the allocation.

This keeps the existing quiet-write serial semantics while removing the
unused gap.

Testing

Added a regression test covering a 92-byte to 86-byte quiet write.

The test verifies that:

  • the new value is read back correctly;
  • the arena is compacted after the shrink;
  • a subsequent compact() is a no-op.

Also verified on a real Android device where the previous behavior was
reported by a raw property-area scanner as:

Found hole in prop area: u:object_r:fingerprint_prop:s0

After this change, the warning is no longer reported.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Replacing a stored property with a shorter value now reclaims unused storage, reducing memory usage while preserving the updated value and its serial information. Replacements of equal or greater length retain existing behavior.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage verifying that shorter values remain readable, reduce storage usage, and leave no further compaction needed.

Quiet writes to long properties can leave an allocation gap when the
new value is shorter. Compact the arena after such writes and add a
regression test for the 92-byte to 86-byte case.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b8b00

Concurrent property reads may return inconsistent values after a quiet write shrinks a long value. Exclude readers during compaction or synchronize relocation with them before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b8b00

The fix reclaims unused space, but a shorter write can now move other properties while readers are using them. Successful isolated execution repairs internal offsets; concurrent reads and interrupted updates lack equivalent protection. Existing write permissions remain unchanged.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Shrinking one long property now implicitly compacts the entire area. Readers retain fixed property offsets and validate only the property serial, while compaction moves allocations and clears their former locations without reader coordination. Concurrent reads can therefore observe invalid property identity or inconsistent values, including unrelated properties in the same area. Interruption during relocation can also leave partially updated shared storage without recovery metadata. Explicit compaction already had these hazards; this PR exposes them through ordinary quiet updates.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The structural effect is bounded to the selected property-area mapping, but can include all live properties moved within it and readers sharing that backing file. System-level writes may also invoke the changed behavior in an associated mirror. No new authority over other areas is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller already able to perform quiet writes can trigger area-wide relocation by shortening an existing long value. Concurrent consumers can then encounter stale offsets or partially patched storage. This is an integrity and availability concern, not an established unprivileged exploit or authorization bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The source documents a single-writer model, not reader exclusion. Readers compare per-property serials; compaction publishes bytes_used after relocation but provides no corresponding area-generation check in the read path. These controls do not coordinate property identity changes.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Interruption after allocations move but before all references are patched can strand inconsistent shared storage. The inspected transition has no recovery marker or rollback path. Successful compaction and the isolated regression do not resolve this interruption state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep implicit shrink handling from relocating unrelated property records unless all consumers can participate in a reader-safe identity protocol. Any relocation design should also define interruption recovery and post-commit error semantics.

Exclude readers while compacting the property area.

When set_quiet() shrinks an existing long value, it stores the unchanged serial before calling compact(). Compaction moves allocations and updates their offsets. read_value() accepts its result when the property serial is unchanged, so a concurrent reader can return an inconsistent value. PropArea permits shared access under a single-writer-only contract, which does not exclude readers. Run compaction only when readers are excluded, or synchronize relocation with readers.
