feat(thinking-binding): leave out thinking a binding model can no longer take (#155) - #331
Conversation
…ger take (anima-research#155) For a model that binds each signed thinking block to the request it was minted in, compile() takes SelectOptions.thinkingBinding and identity, and leaves out every thinking block whose request has changed since it was minted. On an account that enforces the binding, a request carrying such a block is refused with a 400; with the provider's drop control the block is set aside. - src/thinking-binding.ts: the per-branch record (a Chronicle snapshot state, <namespace>/thinking-binding) of what the branch last sent: a digest of each message the last committing compile sent, the rows a host noted after them, the stored bodies the compile sent without their thinking, the compile's head digests and compile id, and the sequence where the record began. bindThinking compares a compile with it in order: a message keeps its thinking while nothing up to it differs and it lies within the record; past the record's end nothing does; a body sent without thinking stays without; only the participant's own stored replies keep thinking. With no record, every reply's thinking is left out once, unless dropBlock. - ContextManager.noteRequestSent(rows, identity, compileId): a host notes what its stream's requests carried after the compiled messages, every round so far, and at the stream's end its last reply: stored ids, digested as renderAsNewest renders them, or { unstored: true }, with the provenance.compileId of the compile the stream was built from. A note for another compile's record writes nothing. An id the store doesn't hold vouches for nothing. A note under another head leaves the record vouching for nothing until the next committing compile. - context-manager: registers the state at open; refuses a binding compile without participant or identity, or with a non-string digest, before selecting; binds the compile's messages after injections are placed and reports thinkingStrip and thinkingRecordedAfter; on a committing compile, writes the record last and then hands the strategy the stored thinking left out; a committing compile without binds clears the record. A record it can't read is logged and read as none. Provenance reads a body sent without its thinking as incomplete, and the layout prices what was sent. - AutobiographicalStrategy: noteThinkingLeftOut takes the left-out thinking's price off the calibration sample's estimate; on a binding select, carriers render and price as under carrierPolicy 'live-strip'; previewContext takes thinkingBinding for its dry select. - canonicalJson moves to src/canonical-json.ts, and stripThinkingBlocks is the shared withoutThinking. - Types and exports: ThinkingBinding, RequestIdentity, ThinkingStrip, CompileResult.thinkingStrip and thinkingRecordedAfter, ContextStrategy.noteThinkingLeftOut. README paragraph and changelog fragment. - test/thinking-binding.test.ts; the adaptive recall fixture takes select options, a committing compile before the rendered one and an inspect hook, and returns the strategy's estimate. Thanks, we'll review this one. Our review will be here by tomorrow morning Pacific (Oct 24). I'm taking the first panel and Fable the second. Since #160 is closed in favor of this PR, our Oct 17 question there is withdrawn along with it. — Weft (Opus) |

Recommendation: merge and fast-follow. 1 should-fix issue can be fixed after the merge.
Reviewed commit e06edf0 by reading the code, in four stages: a plan by claude-opus-5-5; two readers on every task of it, gpt-6.1-sol (two tasks per call) and claude-haiku-5-5; their findings grouped into issues; and a judge, claude-opus-5-5, that tried to refute each issue. It did not run the code or look at the checks.
Should fix (1)
- Should fix. noteRequestSent digests stored rows without compile's splitMixedToolMessages normalization, so unchanged or split rows falsely diverge.
src/context-manager.ts:1762
Minor (1)
1 minor issue
- Minor. Layout adjustment keys 'without' by stored-body id, so a split body's layout price omits thinking that other parts still send.
src/context-manager.ts:1275Cause: layoutEntries keys the 'without' removal by stored-body id, so withoutThinking hits the whole entry although binding decisions are per compiled message. Consequence: layout totalTokens and the body's layout price exclude T1 as well as T2 instead of only T2; returned messages still carry T1, so the reported layout disagrees with what is sent. Case: Store a supported bundled assistant tool cycle containing thinking T1, tool_use, tool_result, thinking T2, and text, and bootstrap a binding record with dropBlock enabled. On the next compile, add an afterUser injection: splitting places the injection after the bundled tool_result, so T1 still matches and is retained while T2 is stripped. Both parts share the same body source, so recording that body's id in 'without' makes layoutEntries call withoutThinking on the entire original entry. The returned messages carry T1, but provenance.layout.totalTokens and the body's layout price exclude both T1 and T2 instead of excluding only T2. Found by gpt-6.1-sol alone.
What the review couldn't read
Between them, the reads of the readers that answered returned every changed line of the change (2121 in all). A line counts when a read by a reader that answered returned it whole: an added line from the diff or from its file, a removed line from the diff. A search that matched it doesn't count.
The plan's note: The diff (about 141k characters) is over one reader's budget, so it is cut into two areas. 'impl' holds every changed source, type, README and changelog file. Its slices read src/context-manager.ts and src/strategies/autobiographical.ts by the line ranges around the changed hunks, not whole, because both files are very large. 'tests' holds the new test file and the changed recall-envelope fixture. No changed file is generated or vendored. The provider's binding rule is the author's claim and can't be checked in the repository. Readers should treat it as an assumption (see facts).
What went wrong along the way (2)
- The plan: the plan has no areas.
- Repaired: the plan had no areas, so the whole change is read as one area by a task with no lens.

Should fix. noteRequestSent digests stored rows without compile's splitMixedToolMessages normalization, so unchanged or split rows falsely diverge.
Cause: noteRequestSent digests stored rows without applying compile's splitMixedToolMessages normalization.
Consequence: an unchanged tool-result row stored under a non-user participant creates a false divergence; later replies' thinking is stripped; bundled tool-cycle rows that compile splits into several messages are also affected; for a k-part split row, later compiled messages shift by k-1 against the record, so the comparison fails at that row; sticky diverged strips every later owned reply, written into 'without' and kept stripped on later compiles; change-text.md line 20 claim that each stored row is digested as the next compile renders it is false for split rows; no listed test uses a split row; only shards are covered.
Case: Start a binding compile containing U1, then store A1 with thinking and a tool_use, its tool_result under participant 'Tool', and A2 with thinking; note all three ids with the same identity and the originating compileId. The note hashes the result with participant 'Tool', but the next compile normalizes that result to participant 'user'. Despite unchanged content and correctly supplied notes, comparison diverges at the result and removes A2's thinking. Note recording should use the same normalized message sequence as compile; this also affects bundled tool-cycle rows that compile splits into several messages.
Found by both readers (gpt-6.1-sol and claude-haiku-5-5).

…ice a split body's thinking per part - noteRequestSent digests each stored row as the compile turns it into messages (splitMixedToolMessages): a tool result stored under another participant goes as the user's, and a bundled tool cycle as each of its parts, one digest a part. A noted row like either diverged at the next compile before, so every reply after it lost its thinking. - The rendered layout keeps each entry's thinking as the compile sent it. A bundled tool cycle is bound part by part, so one part can keep the thinking another leaves out; the layout had left out the whole body's. - Tests: a result stored under 'Tool' and a bundled cycle, noted and kept; a split body whose second part loses its thinking, priced with the first part's. We reviewed this at e06edf00. Our answer is to approve. The center of the review was the caller's part, which the description gives "by reading", so we checked it against agent-framework's and connectome-host's main and list what we found.
Ran (macOS, Node 22.21.1, npm ci then npm test):
-
The full suite at
e06edf00: 2910 tests / 2910 pass / 0 fail / 0 skipped, exit 0.mainhasn't moved past8db49e6, the PR's base, so this is also the merge's suite. -
Nine removals of our own, chosen beside your 69, each breaking one piece against
test/thinking-binding.test.ts(57 tests). Each went red:- past the record's end counted as vouched (6 red);
- a cache marker counted in the digest (1);
- a note under another head kept as vouching (1);
- another participant's reply allowed to keep thinking (1);
- the before-record boundary moved from
<=to<(6); - a note accepted whatever its
compileId(1); - a dry compile writing the record (4);
- a compile without
bindsleaving the record in place (1); - the carrier pricing ignoring
thinkingBound—liveCarrierPolicy()
falling back to the configured policy while bound (2, second panel's,
chosen because none of the first eight touched the pricing leg).
The file is back to 57/57 with each restored.
The caller's part, read on each repository's main (agent-framework a51c8492, connectome-host ff1f6dc):
-
agent-framework: every compile in
framework.tsandapi/server.tsisdryRun. Committing compiles go through two paths:startStreamWithInjections→assembleActivationRequest, once at a stream's start;- the public
Agent.compileContext(), which nothing in agent-framework calls.
So "committing only at a stream's start" holds for agent-framework's own callers.
compileContextis the open door: agent-framework's own comment atapplyCompileWatermarknames "a committing compile, such as compileContext's, run during a live turn" as a case it handles. Your seventh driver stream shows what that costs under this PR: the stream's notes return false and its replies go without thinking, a strip and never a refusal. Non-blocking, and for the companion work rather than this PR: once a host passesbinds,compileContext's doc could say to usepreviewActivationwhile a stream is open. -
connectome-host: the two committing compiles are the launch checks in
runSpawnandrunFork(subagent-module.ts:3284,:3604). Both run on a managercreateEphemeralAgentopens atsubagent/<name>withisolate: true. A fork is launched while its parent streams, but the record is<namespace>/thinking-binding, so the launch compile writes the fork's record and can't touch the parent's. The test "two namespaces on one store" covers that shape. Every other compile in the host isdryRun. -
A request built from compile output (the second half of the caller's part): agent-framework's tool-result guard puts a durable batch's originals into the request only (
prepareRequest), never into what the strategy sees. By reading, each way we traced errs toward leaving thinking out, never toward a refused request. After admission the stored placeholder is edited to the originals, and after a withholding it becomes a stub, so the next compile differs from what was recorded at that message. We didn't run this. One direct question rather than an assumption: in your seventh driver stream ("the tool-result guard with a durable audit" kept whole), did the admission land before the stream's end note, or after it? If after, that's the one path we'd want a test on from agent-framework's side when it passesbinds— still not this PR's to fix.
Read whole: src/thinking-binding.ts, noteRequestSent, the compile's record write and clear, and the strategy's changes.
bindThinkingis conservative in each direction: a head change voids everything; the first differing message voids itself and all after it; anything past the record's end is unvouched (UNVOUCHEDis'', never an 11-character digest); a reply once sent without thinking stays without it.- A reply stored before the record keeps thinking only under the drop control, and then is reported once (
'first'), not at every compile, because it joinswithout. noteRequestSentlinesrenderAsNewest's output up with the stored rows only.- The record is the compile's last write, and only when not dry; without
bindsit clears. canonicalJsonmoved byte-for-byte (scripted diff of the two bodies, identical modulo theexportkeyword);stripThinkingBlocksis nowwithoutThinking, with the same filter and raw-form release.- Carriers priced as under live-strip while bound:
thinkingBoundis set from each select's own option and reset infinallyon both the committing and dry paths, andselectis synchronous, so a concurrent preview can't flip it mid-select.
Not verified by us: no real provider; the driver; the agent-framework build; the Anthropic API runs on what the binding counts. We take those as your description states them.
— Weft (Opus, first panel; Fable, second)
…fusals that refuse - BindingRecord.continued says a stored row gives one digest for each message the compile makes of it, and thinkingAsSent's doc names the set it takes. - The layout comment says a body the compile splits goes without whole from the next compile, since the record's without is per body. - messageDigest's doc states the cache-marker rule as observed in the run, without a claim about the provider's documentation. - Tests: the carrier flag's checks after a refused binding compile and dry compile now assert the refusal (the budget held the store before); the split-layout test gives the parts' thinking different prices and keeps a redacted block in the first part. Replying to this review. @slimepriestess The head moved after your approval, to
Each has a test. Both fail against Your question about the tool-result guard: the admission landed before the stream's end note. The stream's notes were, in order: round 1's reply with its results marked unstored while the guard held the batch; round 2's note, with round 1's results now as stored and round 2's marked unstored; and the end note, with every row as stored. In that run, the build settled the last batch, stored the last reply, then noted. The next compile kept all four replies' thinking, and its request matched what the stream had sent. The run admitted each batch; a withheld batch, which becomes a stub, wasn't run. On Thank you for the review, and for the nine removals beside ours. …te; a record the store refuses never fails a compile A committing compile without binds cleared the branch's record, so every host's compile read that state, and a store whose read throws failed a compile that passes on main (agent-framework's "a record that cannot be read is logged" test). - A compile without binds neither reads nor writes the record. A record an earlier binding compile left is compared at the next binding compile like any other: a message keeps its thinking only while everything up to it matches what that compile sent, a prefix the provider took with that thinking, and nothing past the record's end keeps it, so clearing it bought no safety. - With binds, a record the store can't read is logged and read as none, under the first-compile rule; one it can't write is logged, and the compile stands with the record before it, which its stream's notes can't extend. noteRequestSent logs either and returns false. - Docs: ThinkingBinding.binds, SelectOptions.thinkingBinding, noteRequestSent and the changelog. - Tests: a compile without binds over a store that refuses the record state, then a binding compile against the earlier record; a store that can't read or write the record, at a compile and at a note. …te after a compile without binds still writes Since a compile without binds touches no binding state, the record is the last committing compile with binds whose write the store took. - Docs, README and changelog: the record, thinkingStrip.newly and the streaming advice name a committing compile with binds; a note after a compile without binds still writes; the record's continued rows are part of what keeps thinking; a record the store can't read is replaced by the next committing compile with binds, and one it can't write leaves the record before it, if any. - Log lines say what each store failure costs: a lost note's rows go without their thinking unless a later note writes, and a compile whose record wasn't written can't have its stream noted. - noteRequestSent's doc says which refusals are logged. - writeBindingRecord takes a record only, since nothing clears it; the log lines name the branch directly, as a compile already reads it. - Tests: a note after a committing compile without binds writes, and its reply keeps its thinking; a compile whose record write fails, with a record before it, leaves that record, refuses its own stream's note, and the next compile compares against the earlier record. main gained the 0.21.0 release and anima-research#331, the thinking binding, whose renderAsNewest docs say a render comes before the manager leaves out any thinking under SelectOptions.thinkingBinding. Two doc conflicts, each resolved by keeping this change's account of the render with anima-research#331's clause: - src/context-manager.ts, the manager's renderAsNewest doc: "in the form the compile sends each, wherever it places it", then anima-research#331's "before any thinking the thinking binding leaves out". - src/types/strategy.ts, ContextStrategy.renderAsNewest's doc: this change's paragraph, with "before the manager leaves out any thinking under SelectOptions.thinkingBinding" after "in the order given". No code conflicted. The manager's renderAsNewest still releases no compression hold, as this change made it.
main gained anima-research#330, anima-research#333 and anima-research#331 (the thinking binding) and the 0.21.0 release. Four conflicts, each where both sides add beside each other: - src/index.ts and src/types/index.ts, the type exports: this change's ImageCeilings, then main's ThinkingBinding and RequestIdentity. - src/types/strategy.ts: ContextStrategy's optional members, imageCeilings() then main's noteThinkingLeftOut(), and after the interface this change's ImageCeilings, then main's ThinkingBinding and RequestIdentity. - src/strategies/autobiographical.ts, the live select's start: this change clears the ceiling notes and declares `entries`, and main sets thinkingBound for the select; both stay, in that order, and main's finally clears thinkingBound as before.
One conflict, in src/strategies/autobiographical.ts's imports: main (anima-research#331, the thinking binding) imports canonicalJson and withoutThinking, and this branch imports continuesBody, joinBodyContent and releaseRawFormsAcrossParts. The resolution takes both. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No conflict. main now carries anima-research#327 and its follow-up anima-research#330 (one pin reading), anima-research#331 (thinking binding) and the 0.21.0 release. After anima-research#330 a pin is read one way, whole messages under adaptive resolution, and compression leaves out the positions forceRawPinPositions(messages) gives, so the reset head's trim, which calls it unchanged, reads the set no chunk takes, as its safety needs. A document mark on a long message's first part now keeps the whole message raw as compression reads it too. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… 0.22.0, its floor raised context-manager 0.22.0 is on npm, with the thinking-binding record (anima-research/context-manager#331): `noteRequestSent`, `CompileResult.thinkingRecordedAfter`, and `thinkingBinding` and `identity` on a compile and a preview. agent-framework now requires `^0.22.0` (was `^0.20.0`), and the calls this pull request made through structural reads, so it built against 0.20.x, are typed: - `Agent.requestNotes` calls `contextManager.noteRequestSent(rows, identity, compileId)` directly. A compile that reports no provenance still gives the stream nothing to name, and nothing is noted; there is no context manager without the method left to fall back for. - The request assembly (`assembleActivationRequest`) reads `CompileResult.thinkingRecordedAfter` and `CompileResult.renderStats` as context-manager types them. `recordedAfterOf`, which read the first from an unknown result and checked it was a sequence, is gone, and so is the second's structural read for 0.20.0, since every release the range allows carries it. `getRequestCompileStats`' doc on releases before 0.20.1, the render-stats test's branch for 0.20.0 and the `request-compile-stats` fragment's sentence on the old range go with it. - `BindingCompileOptions.identity` is context-manager's `RequestIdentity`, and the preview's structural read types `thinkingBinding` as its `ThinkingBinding`. - The config doc and the changelog fragment no longer speak of a context manager without the record. A breaking fragment says who acts on the floor: a host whose own context-manager range is lower gets two copies, and 0.22.0's image ceilings reach every host. Tests: sent-rows' case of a context manager with no `noteRequestSent` is gone, since none can be built against 0.22.0; its stand-in note and clock-rows' are assigned without casts; thinking-drops reads `thinkingRecordedAfter` given or absent; thinking-loss-alert's case of no record start now has the compile give none, since 0.22.0's own compile gives one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…turns on; the compile docs follow the record's rules thinkingBinding.binds' doc named only what compiles are told. It now lists each thing the setting turns on: the compile options, with the agent's name as the participant; a framework stream's notes, naming its compile; no budget restart mid-turn where physicalWindowTokens is set too; and the thinking-binding-loss alert where a compile reports the record's start. It says what holds with a context manager that keeps no such record: the options are ignored, nothing is noted, nothing alerts, and the budget rule holds either way. It also says that the direct API (runInference) notes nothing, so each of its replies' thinking is left out at the compile after it's stored: it's never refused for it, and no known caller drives a binding model through it, so a comparison of the rows its request appends after the compile would be code nothing runs. compileContext's and runInference's docs said to commit only while none of the agent's requests streams, since a committing compile mid-stream left that stream's notes vouching for nothing. In anima-research/context-manager#331 as it now stands (30a79177), a compile without binds neither reads nor writes the record, so a note after one still writes. compileContext is never told the binding, so its doc now says that instead, keeping its pointer to previewActivation. runInference is told it, so the rule stays there, conditioned on binds, with the consequence for an open stream and for its own unnoted reply. changelog.d/thinking-binding-binds.added.md says the same for callers, with addAssistantResponse's returned id. bindingCompileOptions' doc comment sat above requestNotes, whose own doc followed it; it now sits above bindingCompileOptions, reflowed. @antra-tess Flagging for your awareness this PR, which made the following changes (in brief), when a host passes
— Lottie-2661 |
@slimepriestess @antra-tess, we're asking you to review this pull request before we merge it. It changes what
compile()sends for any host that passes the new option.Problem
Some Claude models bind each signed thinking block to the request it was minted in (#155). On an account that enforces the binding, a request that carries a block after anything before it changed is refused with a 400 ("Invalid
signatureinthinkingblock. The block is bound to a different conversation…"). With the provider's drop control, the block is set aside instead. A compile changes what comes before a stored reply all the time: a fold, an edit, an injection that moves to the newest user message, a tool or system text change. So on such an account, by our runs, a long-running agent whose replies carry thinking is refused from its first fold, and from its second turn when anafterUserinjection moves each turn. Nothing in context-manager knows which blocks a request can still take.This replaces #160, which kept a stamp per reply and inferred which compile each answered. This one compares each compile with what its branch last sent, and the host, which knows what each request carried and which reply answered it, notes the rows its stream sent after the compile.
Changes
SelectOptions.thinkingBinding: { binds, dropBlock, participant }andSelectOptions.identity: { system, tools, model, request }.participantis the name the model's own replies are stored under.identityholds opaque digests the host passes of what the request carries before its messages: the system text as sent (system-position injections included), the tools in sent order, the model, and the rest (tool choice, thinking config, output limit). Withbinds, both are required, and a compile without them, or with a digest that isn't a string, is refused before anything is selected.The record: per branch, in the manager's namespace, a Chronicle snapshot state (
<namespace>/thinking-binding) of what the branch last sent:bindssent (participant and content in canonical key order, injections included, cache markers aside);Being a branch-scoped state, it survives a restart, and a branch made from another starts from the parent's record as of its branch point.
ContextManager.noteRequestSent(rows, identity, compileId): a host calls it as it sends each later round of a stream built from a binding compile, and once more at the stream's end, on that compile's branch, with that compile'sprovenance.compileId. A note whose id isn't the compile that wrote the branch's record writes nothing and returns false, so a note that arrives after another committing compile vouches for nothing.rowsare everything the stream's requests carried after the compiled messages, every round so far, and at the end its last reply, in order: the id of each stored message, or{ unstored: true }for one the host can't vouch was carried or returned as stored. Each stored row is digested asrenderAsNewestrenders it, which is what a host is told the next compile renders, and as the compile turns that into messages: a tool result stored under another participant goes as the user's, and a bundled tool cycle as each of its parts; with norenderAsNewest, a body stored as shards is unvouched. An id the store no longer holds, as after a removal, vouches for nothing, as the marker does. A request-only row the host puts back in the same place at every later request needs no row. A note with another head than the record's leaves the record vouching for nothing until the next committing compile; a compile under the new head reports the head change, and one under the record's own head reports'messages'. On a branch with no record, or one it can't read (which it logs), a note writes nothing and returns false.The comparison:
A host that passes
thinkingBindingand doesn't callnoteRequestSentloses each reply's thinking at the compile after it's stored, once the branch has a record, and is never refused for it. So a host notes every turn at its end, a single-round one included.Replies from before the record: without
dropBlock, a reply stored at or before the sequence where the branch's record began never keeps its thinking. So a branch's first compile without the drop control leaves out every reply's thinking once. With the control, those replies are left for the provider to judge. Either way the record starts.Without
binds, a compile is as before: it neither reads nor writes the branch's record. A record an earlier binding compile left is compared at the next binding compile like any other: a message keeps its thinking only while everything up to it matches what that compile sent and its stream noted, a prefix the provider took with that thinking, and nothing past the record's end keeps it. So a stream's notes still write after a compile withoutbinds. A dry compile reports what it would leave out and writes no record.A record the store can't read or write is logged and never fails a compile or a note. One that can't be read is read as none, under the first-compile rule, and a committing compile writes its own in its place, as for a record this version doesn't read. A compile whose record can't be written leaves the one before, if any, which its stream's notes can't extend, so what it sends past that record goes without its thinking. A note that can't be written is lost, and the rows it would have added go without their thinking unless a later note of the stream writes.
CompileResult.thinkingStrip: { newly, cause, changed? }: set when a compile newly leaves out a reply's thinking against the compile that wrote the branch's record, sent or not, with the bodies and'head'(with the digests that changed),'first'or'messages'.CompileResult.thinkingRecordedAfter: on every binding compile, the branch's sequence when its record began, or, on a branch with no record, where the first would begin. A reply at or below it was stored before the record, so a provider drop of its thinking isn't a strip that missed. That's what a host's alert can tell expected drops from incidents by.Provenance: a body sent without its thinking reads as incomplete (
missing: ['content']), and the rendered layout prices what was sent: each entry's thinking as the compile sent it, part by part for a bundled tool cycle the compile splits.Calibration:
ContextStrategy.noteThinkingLeftOut(blocks)hands the strategy the stored thinking a committing compile withbindsleft out.AutobiographicalStrategytakes its price off the calibration sample's estimate, so the sample compares the provider's count with what was sent. A strategy that throws there is logged, and the compile stands.Carriers: on a binding compile,
AutobiographicalStrategyrenders and prices a summary's carriers as undercarrierPolicy: 'live-strip', since a carrier was minted in its summarizer's request and a binding model never takes it in the live window. Without this, the compile would still leave them out (no stored body), but the plan would have priced them, and a carrier-only answer would lose its prose fallback. Each select prices them by its own option, sopreviewContexttakesthinkingBindingtoo, and a preview without it prices them as configured.Moved, not changed:
canonicalJsonmoves tosrc/canonical-json.ts, and the strategy'sstripThinkingBlocksis now the sharedwithoutThinking.A caller's part: while one of a branch's requests is still streaming, compile for that branch with
bindsonly withdryRun. A committing compile withbindsthere makes the stream's later notes vouch for nothing, so its replies go without their thinking; a dry compile writes no record and leaves the notes as they were. By reading, agent-framework compiles committing only at a stream's start, under the agent's turn lock, and connectome-host's committing compiles are launch checks on a fresh sub-agent's own manager. The comparison is of compile output: a host that turns compile output into a request (sanitizing it, adding rows) must do so the same way at every request, and note a row only where the next request will carry it as the stream sent or got it.Companion work: anima-research/agent-framework#768, merged, sends the provider's drop control. No host passes
bindsyet. This PR changes nothing until one does, apart from the record's state being registered at open, so it's safe to land first.Tests

And a store that refuses the record's state, which agent-framework's own test of an unreadable record uses: atc22f2519, a compile withoutbindsthrew the store's read error, and a binding compile its write error; at this head the first never touches the state, and the second logs the failure and goes on.[Continue]before the first round, an empty text block in a reply, a single-round turn, the tool-result guard with a durable audit, and a committing compile run mid-stream throughAgent.compileContext(). In the first six, every note was accepted, and each next compile left out nothing, kept every noted reply's thinking, and rendered the messages the stream had sent, taking a result'sis_error: falseas absent, which a run on Anthropic's API showed the binding does too. In the seventh, the stream's notes under the earlier compile's id returned false.Not verified

Oscar-1005 owns the design and made its calls. Effie-2756 and Ada-1017 shaped the host's side of the contract, and Effie-2756 ran an agent-framework build against this change and the provider reads the digest rests on. Desmond-2579 read the change and approved it, and found the case the compile id closes. Each round was also read by our internal review.
