Description

CI already runs Node 24, but the version was hardcoded separately in each workflow, the devcontainer was still on Node 22, and nothing told local tooling (nvm, fnm, asdf, Volta, etc.) which version to use. This makes Node 24 the single standard.

Related Issues

Relates to #1406 (the contributing guide there documents Node 24 as the prerequisite).

Changes Made

  • Add .nvmrc containing 24 as the single source of truth
  • Point every actions/setup-node step (ci, e2e, nightly, pr, release-packages, release-web) at node-version-file: .nvmrc instead of a hardcoded 24
  • Bump the devcontainer image from typescript-node:1-22-bookworm to typescript-node:24-bookworm (the 1-24-* tags don't exist; 24-bookworm does and keeps the same Debian base)
  • Declare engines.node: ">=24" in the root package.json (informational unless engine-strict is enabled)

Testing Done

  • Confirmed mcr.microsoft.com/devcontainers/typescript-node:24-bookworm exists on MCR
  • Confirmed package.json still parses and every workflow checks out the repo before setup-node, so .nvmrc is available when it is read
  • Not run locally: the workflows and a devcontainer rebuild. The CI checks on this PR exercise the setup-node change.

Checklist

  • Code follows project style guidelines
  • Documentation has been updated or added
  • Tests have been added or updated
  • All i18n translation labels have been added (not applicable)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated the project’s development and automated build environments to use Node.js 24.
    • Node.js 24 or later is now required to work with the project.
    • Automated checks and release processes now follow the project’s configured Node.js version, keeping them aligned with the development environment.

📝 Walkthrough

The project now specifies Node.js 24 in .nvmrc and requires Node.js 24 or later in package.json. The development container uses a Node.js 24 image, and GitHub workflows read their Node.js version from .nvmrc.

Changes: Node.js Runtime Configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set the Node.js version baseline
.nvmrc, package.json, .devcontainer/devcontainer.json
.nvmrc specifies Node.js 24. package.json requires Node.js 24 or later. The devcontainer image uses the Node.js 24 tag.
Use the version file in workflows
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/e2e.yml, .github/workflows/nightly.yml, .github/workflows/pr.yml, .github/workflows/release-packages.yml, .github/workflows/release-web.yml
The workflows now read the Node.js version from .nvmrc instead of specifying version 24 directly.

A manual release targeting a historical ref without .nvmrc can fail during Node setup. Other changed workflows are unaffected, so the merge risk is limited to that release scenario.

A rabbit checks the version file,
Node twenty-four is set in style.
The workflows read the same request,
The dev container joins the quest.
A carrot waits beside the code,
