Description

Target compilation records the initial program-to-device placement and final routing permutation in mqt.layout for dynamic qubits. Qiskit export reconstructs a complete TranspileLayout, including idle inputs and routing through unused device qubits. Fixes #2070.

Static qubits already identify device sites. Compilation and synthesis keep those site IDs, skip placement and routing, and reject two-qubit operations that do not fit an explicit topology, even when the target reports unrestricted native operations. Synthesis without routing accepts static circuits on explicit topologies. Supported gates acting on three or more qubits use a target-independent decomposition before routing and native synthesis. Native wider gates can remain on static circuits or all-to-all targets.

Usage

program = QCProgram.from_qiskit(circuit).to_qco()
program.compile_for_target(environment)
mapped = program.to_qiskit(target=environment.target)
print(mapped.layout.final_index_layout())

For the CLI, add --emit=qco-optimized -o mapped.mlir to a target-compilation command. --payload-spec takes a #mqt.payload_spec attribute describing the target's execution capabilities.

Scope and limitations

  • Target compilation rejects a program with an attached layout. Import and direct Qiskit export can preserve such a layout; composing it with a new placement is outside this PR.
  • Dynamic qubits can receive layout metadata when their input allocations have fixed size and fit the device before cleanup. Inputs that exceed device capacity before shrinking may compile without a layout. Static circuits do not receive layout metadata because their site IDs already encode placement.
  • A program cannot mix static and dynamic qubit allocations. Dynamic routing on explicit topology requires one- and two-qubit gates after decomposition. Native wider gates can remain on static circuits or all-to-all targets.
  • Copies, MLIR serialization, and QC/QCO conversions retain layout metadata. General compiler transformations clear it. QIR, OpenQASM, and jeff output do not carry it. Numeric layouts omit original input register names and input ancilla labels; incomplete imported layouts remain unsupported.

Validation

  • Full native suite: 3,742 passed, one skipped. Full Python suite: 1,564 passed.
  • Stub generation, executable documentation build, and repository lint passed. Changed-file C++ lint passed.
  • Direct Qiskit export keeps static operations on their device wire indices. In-process timing on a 1,000-site line target fell from about 7.9 ms to 0.60 ms for an eliminated static input and from 7.5 ms to 0.66 ms for an active static SWAP, measured on this machine.

Hosted CI passed on commit cea397e94, including Linux, macOS, Windows, Read the Docs, lint, and coverage.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added qubit-layout tracking during target compilation, including optional initial placement and detached mapping results.
    • Qiskit imports and exports now preserve supported transpiler layout metadata, including routing, ancillas, registers, and output ordering.
    • Added APIs and command-line support to explicitly discard layout metadata.
  • Behavior Changes

    • Layout metadata is invalidated by transformations that may change resource or wire identity.
    • Unsupported exports now require explicit layout discard and report a clear error.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance for layout provenance, routing permutations, compilation layouts, and discard behavior.

Walkthrough

This PR adds shared qubit-layout provenance across MLIR, native target compilation, Qiskit translation, compiler pipelines, CLI output, and Python bindings. It tracks initial and final placement, preserves supported metadata, invalidates stale metadata, and requires explicit discard for lossy outputs.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to acfee

No actionable merge-blocking issue is established. The documented layout limitations and target-matching requirements are explicit; merge after normal checks pass.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to acfee

Crafted source-tracking metadata can reach an out-of-bounds memory access when mapping is invoked directly. Standard target compilation rejects preexisting source tags and rebuilds tracking information, limiting this exposure. Whether untrusted inputs reach standalone mapping in a hosted environment is not established.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Standalone mapping trusts preparation metadata before enforcing its relationship to target capacity. For a two-site target, a supplied source count of three and a root source index of two pass the attribute-level checks. LayoutRecorder marks the count invalid, but record() still reads initial[2] from a two-element vector and can conditionally write there before finish() rejects the state. This introduces a native-memory safety boundary failure for callers processing attacker-controlled MLIR through mapping without target preparation; code execution is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified attack requires control of MLIR source-tracking attributes and a caller that invokes standalone mapping. Its demonstrated scope is native-memory safety within the compilation process. Remote reachability, cross-tenant exposure, credential access and code execution are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Attacker-supplied source count exceeding target capacity can make an out-of-range source index appear valid to record(). The invalid recorder flag is checked only after the native vector access, so eventual rejection does not contain the memory-safety failure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Standard target preparation clears old layout and source-count metadata, rejects existing source-index tags, and constructs new indices only within target capacity. This prevents the identified crafted-tag route through normal compileForTarget execution, but is not a standalone mapping precondition.
  • observed — Final-layout validation and exact target-site ordering checks protect the interchange boundary against malformed permutations and incompatible device ordering. They occur outside the unsafe source-tracking access and therefore do not mitigate it.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Recompilation invalidates earlier layout metadata before placement, and failure is explicitly nontransactional. These controls rebut the claim that normal recompilation silently combines an old initial layout with new routing; callers must not reuse failed compilation contents as successful output.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make standalone placement and mapping enforce the source-tracking contract before consuming tags or mutating IR: reject counts beyond actual target capacity and validate every source index against the allocated vector, independently of the supplied count.

Let me try to get a quick review in here. Don't want to be the blocker here.

Skip layout tracking when preplaced qubits use placement that does not
record their device sites. Reject programs with an attached layout during
target compilation instead of silently replacing it. Remove the completed
internal plan and align the public docs and tests with these limits.

Assisted-by: Codex
Run the existing layout preparation for synthesis-only target pipelines as
well as full compilation. Placement can then attach the program-to-device
mapping for allocated qubits, including idle device sites. Cover the output
and keep the topology rejection test on an untouched input program.

Assisted-by: Codex
Reject mixed static and dynamic qubit allocations at the program boundary.
Skip placement and routing for static circuits, including programs whose
qubits disappear during cleanup. Check two-qubit topology independently of
native-gate support and allow synthesis on explicit topologies when site IDs
are already fixed. Preserve native wider gates on static circuits.

Remove mixed-mode compiler tests, cover the no-workspace path, and update
the target-compilation API guidance.

Alright. I took this for another spin and simplified a few things I stumbled upon.
This should be good to go for a first version now. I am going to merge this now while CI is green so that the other PRs can directly pick up on it before I go to sleep. Feel free to submit follow-up PRs later on! :shipit:

Use a cyclic coordinate frame to support fixed RX, RY, or RZ pulses
with arbitrary rotations around a distinct axis. Keep symbolic angles
algebraic and preserve global phase.

* 🐛 Compare fixed parameters in target contracts

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Reject target changes that alter fixed parameter values, including changes
between fixed and unrestricted capabilities.

* 🧪 Cover symbolic fixed-pulse synthesis

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Exercise numeric and symbolic angles in the native coverage suite, including phase-sensitive special-angle paths. Pass the optional half turn directly to satisfy clang-tidy.

* ♻️ Share fixed-pulse synthesis recipes

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Use one pulse and phase recipe for numeric and symbolic synthesis. Keep the computed pulse plan internal instead of exposing it through Python.

* 🔧 Scope pulse synthesis includes to their library

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Use a private include root for the shared synthesis helper, avoiding parent-directory traversal without installing implementation details.

* 🐛 Preserve fixed-pulse lowering during fusion

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Keep fixed-pulse targets out of the new target-aware fusion stage.
Generic fusion lacks their pulse descriptor and rotation simplification
can undo constrained angles, causing assertions or repeated rewrites.
The existing fixed-pulse lowering handles these targets directly.

Existing full-unitary synthesis tests cover constant and runtime angles
across all supported rotation axes.

* ⚡ Reuse cached fixed-pulse bases during routing

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

The native-cost routing code now queries the target basis repeatedly.
Borrow its cached pulse recipe through routing and synthesis instead of
copying the vector at each query and emission. Keep Python property
access independent through an explicit copy policy.

Check fixed-pulse cost estimates against native emission and full-unitary
semantics. Document the remaining fusion and synthesis limits.

* 📝 Clarify native-only target compilation limits

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Matching each input gate does not guarantee successful compilation when
no synthesis basis exists. Optimizations can combine native gates into
an unsupported gate or angle. Record this existing limitation separately
from the fixed-pulse synthesis contract.

* 🐛 Preserve native gate sequences during target cleanup

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Keep gate-changing canonicalization out of explicit-target cleanup, including the inliner, so targets without a universal basis can compile native sequences. Keep structural cleanup and unrestricted-target optimization unchanged.

Use the cached fixed-pulse recipe for numeric run fusion. Preserve native runs unless synthesis reduces their gate count. Cover both target pipelines, exported gate forms, exact phase, and pulse cancellation.

* 🎨 Match pass hook visibility

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Keep initialization and execution hooks protected, matching the MLIR Pass API.

* ♻️ Simplify target synthesis integration

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Keep shared pulse formulas in the existing Euler utilities and structural
canonicalization in target synthesis. Remove the two private files and
the extra include path. Keep target cleanup choices local instead of
changing the general cleanup API.

* ♻️ Trim target setup and cleanup branches

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Build fixed pulses directly in their result storage and move the selected
recipe into the cached basis. Stop before entangler selection when no
single-qubit basis exists. Let the canonicalizer factory choose cleanup
without duplicating that branch in the target pipeline.

* ♻️ Centralize target cleanup selection

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Reuse the shared QCO cleanup sequence with the target canonicalizer.
Select gate preservation in the canonicalizer and inliner factories,
removing duplicated cleanup and boolean policy wiring from the target
pipelines. Preserve the standard inliner for unrestricted targets.

* 🐛 Align fixed-target Python API conventions

Use the uppercase enum name and display an empty tuple for the
supports_operation parameter default. Regenerate the Python stubs and
record reproducible validation commands with their local scope.

* ♻️ Limit fixed-pulse synthesis to native RX gates

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Keep fixed-parameter capability matching general while limiting synthesis
to unrestricted RZ and native RX quarter turns with optional half turns.
Remove arbitrary-angle recipes, coordinate conversion, and pulse storage.

Merge the unrestricted RZ axis before and after synthesis, preserving
phase, symbolic cancellation, and parameter dominance. Keep fixed RX
pulses intact and document the supported hardware scope.

* 🧪 Cover fixed-pulse targets with routed layouts

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Exercise RZ, fixed RX quarter turns, and iSWAP in the existing layout
export regression after rebasing onto #2553. Verify native pulse angles
and full-unitary semantics through placement, routing, and QC export.
Record the refreshed integration checks; no production changes are needed.

* ♻️ Reuse ZSXX for constrained target pulses

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Use the existing ZSXX decomposition for named SX/X gates and signed fixed
RX quarter turns with optional half turns. Require a usable single-qubit
synthesis basis for target compilation and remove special cleanup APIs.

Preserve distinct instruction names and fixed parameter alternatives in
Qiskit target import and circuit export. Keep phase and placement checks,
and prioritize current Braket devices while leaving ion gates to #2578.

Refresh the contract documentation and record native, Python, lint, and
executable documentation validation after independent design review.

* 🐛 Rebuild documentation artifacts in nox

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Force the docs session to rebuild Core with its documentation CMake
options. A cached editable wheel can omit generated MLIR reference pages,
causing missing includes and secondary heading warnings in a clean tree.

The strict executable documentation build and generated-page link check
pass with the rebuilt artifacts.

* 🐛 Pass the optional native name directly

🤖 *AI text below* 🤖

Avoid dereferencing and reconstructing the optional operation name when
creating target capabilities. This preserves behavior and resolves the
clang-tidy diagnostic.
