Closes #585

What changed

  • FileRateLimitAdapter now creates its storage path recursively (mkdir($this->path, 0777, true)), the same way ViewCache does.
  • Added testFileAdapterCreatesMissingParentDirectories, which constructs the adapter with a path whose parent folders do not exist.
  • Added a Fixed entry to the 3.1.0 changelog.

Why

The adapter created its folder through FileSystem::makeDirectory(), which calls mkdir() without the recursive flag. When the configured path had a missing parent (for example cache/data with no cache/ folder), every request that went through the rate limit middleware failed with mkdir(): No such file or directory. A fresh install of the starter project hit this (quantum-php/project#203).

The shared makeDirectory() contract is unchanged, since other adapters and callers depend on it.

Breaking changes

None. A path that already exists, or whose parent exists, behaves as before.

Testing

  • Added testFileAdapterCreatesMissingParentDirectories; it fails without the fix.
  • Checked on a starter project without a cache/ folder: GET /api/posts returned 500 before and returns 200 now, and cache/data is created.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • The file-based rate limiter now creates missing parent directories for its configured storage path, avoiding errors when the directory does not exist.

📝 Walkthrough

The file rate-limit adapter now creates missing parent directories for its configured storage path. A test checks nested path creation, and the changelog records the change.

Changes: File rate-limit path creation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Create nested storage paths
src/RateLimit/Adapters/FileRateLimitAdapter.php, tests/Unit/RateLimit/Adapters/FileRateLimitAdapterTest.php, CHANGELOG.md
The constructor uses recursive mkdir when the configured path is not a directory. The test checks that construction creates a nested path. The changelog records this behavior.

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to the recursive mkdir call in FileRateLimitAdapter, its focused nested-path test, and the related 3.1.0 changelog entry. The shared makeDirectory() implementation is unchanged. The changes support issue #585 and do not include the explicitly out-of-scope shared primitive or unrelated error handling.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 25.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 4 functions across 2 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #585 requires recursive creation of the configured FileRateLimitAdapter path, unchanged existing rate limiter tests, and passing composer test, composer cs:check, and composer phpstan. The reviewed source calls mkdir($this->path, 0777, true). The added test constructs a two-level missing parent path and verifies its creation. The available evidence does not include results for the three required Composer commands or establish that all existing rate limiter tests pass.

Resolution

Provide CI or local output that confirms composer test, composer cs:check, and composer phpstan pass, including the existing rate limiter tests.

Treat a directory created by another request as success.

The web request path can construct FileRateLimitAdapter concurrently. If two requests find path absent, both can pass isDirectory(). The second mkdir($this->path, 0777, true) can then return false and emit an E_WARNING after the first request creates the directory. The web error handler converts enabled warnings into ErrorException, so the second request can fail even though the directory exists.

Handle the mkdir() result with a postcondition check. Treat an existing directory as success, and report failure only when the path still is not a directory. Suppress or capture the expected warning so the race does not become an exception.
