fix(browser-pay): retry the relay until the total deadline - #1248

The paused CDP request is failed on the first relay_in_progress. The same idempotency key is not posted again. Co-authored-by: Rimmely Ewan <ratataque@users.noreply.github.com>

A per-attempt timeout, a transport error, or a router 502, 503, or 504 posts the same idempotency key again until the outcome is terminal or the total deadline passes. One attempt defaults to 25s. The total wait defaults to 55s. Co-authored-by: Rimmely Ewan <ratataque@users.noreply.github.com>

…auses One flight now owns the post and the backoff, so a second pause cannot repost a key that another waiter already saw as unknown. Detach aborts that backoff. Co-authored-by: Rimmely Ewan <ratataque@users.noreply.github.com>
Co-authored-by: Rimmely Ewan <ratataque@users.noreply.github.com>
The attempt timer now aborts the flight's POST, so two pauses share one retry. timeoutMs and attemptTimeoutMs must be finite and positive. Co-authored-by: Rimmely Ewan <ratataque@users.noreply.github.com>
The outcome decision sits outside the wait, so a throwing logger cannot release the shared flight twice. A deadline failure also stops further posts. Co-authored-by: Rimmely Ewan <ratataque@users.noreply.github.com>

🔴 Uncooperative relay blocks retries until deadline
When a custom relay ignores abort, postAttempt keeps awaiting its promise after the attempt timer fires. No second POST starts, so the paused request expires without retrieving an available replay.
Learn more
The per-attempt timer aborts an AbortController, but the relay interface does not require implementations to observe its signal: PaymentRelay. Awaiting the relay promise keeps the shared flight blocked if the relay ignores abort. Each paused request has a separate total timeout in awaitRelay; that timeout fails the browser request rather than starting a second POST. A retryable result may already be available from the server under the same idempotency key, but the client never requests it.
Example: A custom relay's first POST stays pending for 40 seconds despite its abort signal. The server completes the payment at 27 seconds. With a 25-second attempt cap and a 35-second total deadline, the client fails at 35 seconds without making a second POST to retrieve the replay.
Recommended fix: Enforce the attempt deadline independently of the relay promise with a timeout race in postAttempt. Abort the attempt and reject the race with RelayTimeoutError, while safely observing and discarding any later relay settlement. Preserve the existing shared-flight abort behavior.

Leaving this unresolved. A relay that ignores abort must not start a second POST while the first call is still running. That attempt may still be charging. The pause fails at the total deadline instead. httpPaymentRelay does observe the signal, so the attempt cap aborts the socket and the same key is posted again. The README states that a relay which ignores abort still fails when the deadline passes.
Drop the detach timing bound. A second pause still fulfills when the first waiter times out during the shared poll. Co-authored-by: Rimmely Ewan <ratataque@users.noreply.github.com>

Relax the upper bound on the abort timing.
attemptTimeoutMs is 120 ms. The assertion aborts[0] < 160 leaves only 40 ms for timer and event-loop delay. Node timers can fire late when the event loop is busy. A shared CI runner can easily delay a timer by more than 40 ms, so this assertion can fail without a code defect. The test is meant to prove that the shared attempt is aborted once, at the attempt timeout and not the total deadline. That deadline is 2 000 ms. An upper bound well below the deadline still proves this.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winWiden the gap between the two waiter deadlines.
The two waiters share one flight. Their deadlines are only about 40 ms apart. Line 816 sets this gap. The
waitForbefore it adds up to 10 ms more. After the first waiter times out, the test must observe thefailedevent and then callreleaseSecond(RELAYED)before the second waiter's 500 ms deadline passes. The event arrives only after aFetch.failRequestround trip over the mock CDP socket.waitForthen polls every 10 ms. On a loaded CI runner, the second waiter can also time out. If it does,Fetch.fulfillRequestnever occurs and the test fails intermittently. The interceptor itself is not at fault. Make the gap larger than the scheduling jitter.Proposed fix
emitPaused(cdp, "req-early-deadline"); await waitFor(() => calls === 1, "first post"); - await new Promise((resolve) => setTimeout(resolve, 40)); + await new Promise((resolve) => setTimeout(resolve, 250)); emitPaused(cdp, "req-later-deadline");The first waiter still times out at about 500 ms. Its first poll sleep is 200 ms, so
callsstill reaches 2 before that timeout. The second waiter's deadline moves to about 750 ms.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Primary change type
Problem and motivation
The browser fails a paused card request after 20 seconds. The relay handler can still be inside a budget under 30 seconds, and Heroku's router cuts the HTTP request at 30 seconds. Raising the client timeout cannot outlive that router. The page can show a failure while the server is still able to send the card. A finished relay replays on the same idempotency key, so a retry does not charge twice.
Summary and scope
Stacked on the
relay_in_progresspoll. A per-attempt timeout, a transport error, or HTTP 502, 503, or 504 posts the same idempotency key again until the outcome is terminal or the total deadline passes.AttachOptions.attemptTimeoutMsdefaults to 25 seconds, five seconds under the 30 second router cutoff, so the client aborts and retries instead of waiting for the router to drop the socket. That timer belongs to the shared flight. Every waiter of the key retries together. Each waiter's own timer is onlytimeoutMs, the total deadline, and it does not abort the flight while another waiter remains.timeoutMsnow defaults to 55 seconds: two 25 second attempts plus backoff. That covers one handler budget under 30 seconds and a second POST that reads the replay if the first attempt was cut or timed out. HTTP 500, other 4xx, and redirects are not retried. HTTP 500 is an application response.FailureReasonis unchanged.timeoutMsandattemptTimeoutMsmust be finite, positive, and at most 2147483647 when set.A relay that ignores the abort signal does not get a second POST while the first call is still running. The pause fails at the total deadline.
httpPaymentRelayobserves the signal, so the attempt cap aborts the socket and the same key is posted again.Out of scope: placeholder matching, profile discovery, and mapping HTTP 400 to its own failure.
