fix: enforce agent boundaries and clean up attempt lifecycles - #39
Fix five demonstrated boundary and lifecycle gaps while keeping the existing architecture:
Compare agent writes and roll back files against the pre-phase commit. Read-only HEAD movement aborts, and incomplete crash rollback cannot retry. Preserve tracked-file exclusions from declared build outputs across agent commits.
Aggregate parent run state in the same transaction that sweeps a lost attempt.
Fence API GET/HEAD Host authorities even without Origin, preserving loopback, UI-token, and explicit listener-IP access.
Release cancellation waiters after normal completion or repair-continuation release.
Prevent overlapping interval polls from letting stale responses replace newer UI data; include the rebuilt embedded bundle.

go test -race -timeout 10m ./internal/controlplane/... ./internal/worker/... ./internal/engine/... ./internal/runtime/... ./cmd/jig/... — 771 tests passed; all 397 engine race tests passed after the final parallel-retry fix
UI typecheck, all 63 UI tests, and production build
Independent GPT-6.1 SOL review: PASS; the parallel-crash finding was fixed and re-reviewed
Focused regressions cover committed/empty/reverted read-only edits, sequential and parallel crash retry refusal (including empty commits), tracked build-output handling, run aggregation, Host fencing, cancellation cleanup, and polling recovery
Browser smoke on desktop/mobile: loopback API reads succeed; a deliberately delayed poll stays at one concurrent request; current UI delivery controls remain present
Git history from a breaching agent is retained for inspection rather than rewritten. Proxies must rewrite Host to the listener authority or supply the existing UI token. Live provider runs and remote GitHub publishing were not exercised.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved protection for read-only operations: committed changes are detected, and attempts that move repository history are not retried.
Fixed rollback handling when repository history changes, preserving history and reporting rollback failures.
Restricted read requests with untrusted Host headers; requests to the listener’s own IP remain supported, and a UI token can authorize access.
Fixed run status updates after a job is marked as failed.
Prevented overlapping polling requests and ensured polling recovers after a failed request.
The PR updates commit-boundary enforcement and recovery, HTTP Host validation, worker cancellation cleanup, failed-run aggregation, and polling request control. It also updates related tests and README guidance.
Changes: Commit Boundary Enforcement
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Pin snapshots and enforce boundaries internal/engine/boundary.go, internal/engine/boundary_test.go
Snapshots pin the starting commit for change checks and rollback. Tests cover committed changes, allowlisted writes, and build-output paths tracked before or after a commit.
Parallel retries stop when a crashed member changes HEAD. Phase handling reports rollback failures as an aborted run. Tests and README guidance cover these cases.
GET and HEAD requests without a valid UI token require a trusted Host. The listener IP is trusted when it matches the request Host IP. Tests and README guidance cover loopback, listener-IP matching, UI-token access, and reverse-proxy Host forwarding.
Attempt Cancellation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Merge and clean up cancellation signals cmd/jig/worker.go, cmd/jig/cancellation_test.go
The worker passes a merged cancellation signal to the attempt and stops cancellation waiters on completion or continuation release. Tests cover completion and input-channel closure.
Failed Run Aggregation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Aggregate run state after job failure internal/controlplane/sweep.go, internal/controlplane/store_test.go
The sweep aggregates run state in the transaction that marks a job failed. The test checks that the run enters RunFailed.
usePolled skips a run while another load is in flight and clears the in-flight state after success or failure. Tests cover pending loads, error recovery, and resource changes.
A stalled request can leave queue, fleet, or run data frozen. Add a client-side fetch timeout before merging.

Explanation
The title "fix: enforce agent boundaries and clean up attempt lifecycles" matches the main change. The PR enforces agent write boundaries (committed changes, HEAD movement, rollback against the pre-phase commit) and cleans up attempt lifecycles (cancellation waiter release, run aggregation after a lost attempt, no retry after a crashed commit). The title does not mention the Host-header fencing, the polling fix, or the UI bundle rebuild. Those are secondary to the main change, so the title is still accurate and specific enough.

Bound a pending load so polling can resume.
If a request remains pending, inFlight stays true and every later interval poll returns. The API client's fetch has no timeout, so a stalled request can leave queue, fleet, or run data frozen until the view remounts. Give each request a finite timeout and abort the underlying fetch. The resulting failure will clear inFlight and permit a later poll. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

internal/controlplane/http.go — hostAuthorityIsTrusted returns false for any non-loopback hostname even when the listener is explicitly enabled on a non-loopback address and the Host matches the listener IP, breaking the documented non-loopback support. Fix: move the listener-IP check before the loopback rejection so explicit non-loopback listener IPs are accepted.
internal/engine/phase.go — restoreSnapshot failure after a phase error now returns phaseAborted without recording the phase result, leaving the phase result unrecorded on rollback failure. Fix: record the result before the rollback, or record it in both branches.
cmd/jig/worker.go — stopCancellation() is deferred only when !kept, but DeferToContinuation calls stopCancellation() itself; on the continuation path stop is never invoked via the deferred path, leaking the anyClosed waiters/goroutines. Fix: call stopCancellation() unconditionally in the deferred function (or remove the call from the continuation callback).
internal/engine/parallel.go — the HEAD check before member retry runs runGit on every retry loop iteration even when len(next) == 0, adding unnecessary process spawns. Fix: guard the check with len(next) > 0 (already present) but hoist it out of the loop or only run it when a retry is actually possible.
web/dist/assets/index-CUNI1f9t.js — a minified built asset is deleted without a corresponding rebuild source in the diff, leaving the UI bundle missing. Fix: restore the asset from the build output or remove the deletion if the bundle is regenerated at deploy time.
