Clearing an edit ending in #general left channel autocomplete active for 120 milliseconds. Pressing Enter during that window restored the suggestion instead of opening the delete confirmation. Replacing the edit could also lose text to that stale suggestion.

Close channel autocomplete immediately when its query disappears. Valid queries retain the existing debounce. During channel autocomplete selection, Enter cannot split the paragraph before the suggestion handler runs. The channel-open ref updates in a layout effect, so Enter handling follows the committed UI. Mention and emoji keyboard handling retain their existing behavior. No retries or sleeps were added; existing edit/delete assertions remain intact.

Stack

First PR in the remote-agent stack, based on main. #29 follows this PR with the separate provider-launch CI fix. This prerequisite fixes an existing CI failure that also reproduces without the remote-agent changes.

Validation

  • The new hook regression failed on the original code and passes with the fix: four cases cover clearing, replacement, query completion, and pending-query cancellation.
  • Twenty-one browser cases passed without retries: three runs each cover Enter/Tab/mouse channel selection, confirm-delete, cancel-delete, non-empty editing, and agent mentions while DM members load. Selection preserves a single paragraph and subsequent typing.
  • After moving the ref update into a layout effect, all seven affected browser scenarios passed again without retries. TypeScript checking, targeted Biome checks, and the E2E frontend build passed.
  • The final full frontend suite (6,832 Node tests and 164 jsdom tests), static checks, TypeScript checking, and protected desktop builds passed before the layout-effect correction; the affected browser checks and frontend build passed again afterward. Full local just ci has not passed as one run: two unchanged mobile tests timed out in the full suite and passed in isolation; terminal unit tests passed in an isolated Linux container with the standard tools missing on the Nix host. GitHub checks are running on the updated heads.

Human acceptance

In the app, edit your own message ending in #general, select all, delete, and immediately press Enter. The delete confirmation must open. Cancel must preserve the message; confirm must remove it. Repeat with replacement text and verify the entire replacement saves. Select #general with Enter, Tab, and a click; following text must stay in the same paragraph. In a DM thread, select an agent mention while members load, then resend after membership resolves; automatic addressing must remain intact.

At the author’s direction, a clean CodeRabbit review gates readiness for human review. Human runtime acceptance is still pending; it is not a prerequisite for leaving draft.

📝 Walkthrough

Channel suggestions close immediately when edits invalidate the query. Enter is consumed while autocomplete is open. Composer wiring and tests cover channel selection with Enter, Tab, and click.

Changes: Channel autocomplete

Layer / File(s) Summary
Channel query lifecycle
desktop/src/features/messages/lib/useChannelLinks.ts, desktop/src/features/messages/lib/useChannelLinks.jsdom-test.mjs
Invalid query edits clear the active query and selection immediately. Hook tests cover cancellation, suggestion closure, stale-key handling, and reopening.
Suggestion selection in the editor

Composer refs expose channel-autocomplete state to the editor. Enter no longer splits the paragraph while autocomplete is open. End-to-end tests cover Enter, Tab, and click selection, including subsequent typing.

Agent review of 7d6714b90e697d8c7c0b7ea49656c54af7c5b4cd against main.

Minimalism: 9/10. Elegance: 9/10. Correctness: 9/10. No blocking findings in the current diff. Immediate query closure prevents stale channel insertion after clearing or replacing an edit. The paragraph-split guard applies only to channel autocomplete, preserving existing mention and emoji handling.

Validation: the production-hook regression failed before the fix; all four hook cases pass. Twenty-one browser cases passed without retries (three repetitions each of Enter/Tab/click channel selection, confirm-delete, cancel-delete, replacement editing, and agent mentions while DM membership loads). TypeScript, Biome, and the E2E build passed. The final full frontend suite (6,996 tests), static checks, and protected desktop builds passed; human workflow confirmation remains pending under AGENTS.md.
